There's no place like home. The ModJacks have just one road visit to make among their eight remaining games in the Central Ontario Junior C Hockey League schedule. From it, two facets should become ev- ident. 1. they could make the race for first place interesting and 2. an oppor- tunity to fire up the burners with playoffs looming is a natural. ModJacks closed out their road sched- ule against Central Ontario teams on a winning note Sunday afternoon by dou- bling Georgina Ice 6-3 in Sutton. Their remaining tilt away from Scugog Arena is Jan. 27 against eastern Ontario's Brighton squad. Less than 24 hours earlier in Port Perry, the MoJacks snapped a modest two-game losing streak with a convinc- ing 6-2 victory over the Lakefield Chiefs. ModJacks struggled earlier in the week with losses in Little Britain 3-1 and Uxbridge 6-5. | The Bruins rule the roost and though hesitating for a second or two, MoJacks' skipper Chic Carnegie is not overly op- "I honestly think first place is gone, that is unless Uxbridge collapses," he gerves up. "What I really want to see is us showing teams we are ready for the playoffs. It doesn't really matter how it goes Now. Gunners Keith Leslie and Todd Den- nis each tallied two goals for the Mo- timistic about a changing of the guards. ModJacks have to fight for first Jacks in Sutton. Captain Gavin Co- chrane compiled four points, including a goal, and speedster Trevor Bremner earned his second goal of the season which eventually became the game win- ner. | Ironically, his first goal was one night earlier in rather dramatic fashion. After piling into three Lakefield players simultaneously at the Port blue line, Bremner proceeded to introduce one other to the ice before heading for the net. "We were working the triangle," Bremner recalls his well-executed and timely maneuver, "and when I went for the net, I said to myself wanted the re- bound if thereis one." As if it was choreographed, Lakefield goalie Colin Caley left a short rebound from a Derek Anderson shot for Bremn- er and the rest will be talked around the household kitchen table for a long time. His marker gave the ModJacks a 4-2 lead with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. ModJdacks fired three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes for the win. Corey Bricknell had two goals, in- cluding an empty netter, with the oth- ers from Dennis, Steve Barkwell and Scott Heasman. "We're starting to get scoring from other players (than the regular snipers) and it's pleasing to see at this point of the season," said Carnegie. Carnegie also performed surgery to his lines and the second unit looks a keeper - Bricknell up from his usual de- fensive role to centre a line with Mike Pigeau and Ryan Speake. Turnto Page 18 Hailey Wilson. A highlight of the game was the tre- mendous effort given in goal by Lisa Geer. Even though the team lost, some good defensive and offensive plays were made by Whitney Reid, Holly Al- lison, Shannon Hatfield, Shannon Urquhart, Christine Cotie, Janna Os- tafichuk, Melissa Dallas, Kristin Waller, Sarah Al- dridge and Nicole Ansell. The next game for the Shepstone team was against Oshawa. The Port girls improved their play and totally dominated Oshawa for the first peri- od. After building up a 9-1 lead Port was shut out in the second, thanks to some great saves by their goalie. Fortunately, the Shep- stone defense played a strong game and kept Oshawa off the scoresheet to secure the 9-1 win. Goals for Port were scored by Jackie (three), Shan- non H. (two), Nicole (two), Heather and Holly. As- sists were made by Hailey (two), Holly, Whitney, Janna and Jackie. Lisa played goal again and con- tinued to make key stops to help the team. The checking and hustle shown by Sarah, Chris- tine, Ashley, Melissa, Kristin and Shannon U. left very few opportumni- ties for Oshawa to score. With only three teams in the Petite C Division, each team played the oth- ers twice in the round rob- in format. The next match for Port was against Man- vers. This game was very exciting for both teams and one of the best games of the tournament Port opened up a 2-0 lead early in the first with Manvers tying it up halfway through. Port again opened up a two goal lead (5-3) by the end of the peri- od. After only five minutes had played in the second, Manvers had fought back to tie the game at six. Manvers used their mo- mentum to take a 9-7 lead with a little over three minutes to play in the game. Although Port had to serve a penalty late in the game, the team scored a short-handed goal, nar- rowing the lead to 9-8, with only 2:15 left. Still short-handed, Port kept the pressure on Manvers and pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, which resulted in another goal to tie the game at nine with only 1:39 left to play. De- spite their continued strong play, Port was un- able to beat the goalie and settled for a 9-9 tie. Goals were scored by Jackie (81x), Nicole (two) and Sarah. Assists were made by Hailey (two), Christine (two), Holly, Ashley and Whitney. Heather was back in goal for this game and made some great saves against the very strong Manvers offense. The Shepstone team played well for most of the game and demon- strated excellent team play. The strong checking and hustle shown by Shannon H., Shannon U., Lisa, Melissa and Kristin contributed significantly to Port's comeback. With a record of 1-1-1, earning three points, the Shepstone team played their last game of the round robin against Oshawa. With Oshawa holding a record of 0-2-0, earning 0 points, and Manvers a record of 2-0-1, earning five points, Port needed a win or a tie against Oshawa to secure a place in the Champion- ship game. The girls con- tinued to show improve- ment in their team play by executing their passes ac- curately and properly po- sitioning themselves both on offense and defense. Their effort was rewarded with a 5-3 lead after one and a 6-3 win. Again, the Oshawa team played a strong game but for the most part was held at bay. Goals for Port, were scored by Jackie (two), Hailey, Ashley, Kristin and Whit- ney. Assists for the Shep- stone Haulage team were made by Jackie, Sarah and Whitney. A great ef- fort by Lisa in the net and the support provided to her by Heather, Holly, Christine, Shannon H., Melissa, Shannon U., and Nicole, on both offense and defense, helped a lot. These games set up a Championship Game be- tween undefeated Man- vers and second place Port. This final game was the third game of the day for Port and the fourth for Manvers. The Shepstone team opened the scoring and built up a 3-0 lead be- fore Manvers was able to get on the scoreboard. With Port leading 4-1 af- ter the first, Manvers scored early in the second but was then held score- less for the remainder of the game. Port seemed tireless as they continued to play a strong, hard- checking game and beat the Manvers goalie four more times to lock up an 8- 2 championship win!! . Scoring for Port were Jackie (six), Kristin and Shannon H. Assists were made by Holly (two), Ash- ley, Lisa, Shannon U,, Kristin, Sarah and Nicole. Heather played her best game yet in goal and was extremely hot dgainst the Manvers sharpshooters. Although not making the scoresheet, the game could not have been won without the strong effort put out by Hailey, Chris- tine, Melissa. and Whit- ney. The continued im- provement of the team throughout the tourna- ment certainly showed the girls that their hard work can payoff. From the coaches' per- spective, the players played well all weekend and every one of them worked together as a team to help win the games. passing to the forwards. ended. the top corner. Auctioneers action Pearce Auction Novice hosted Stouffville Friday, Jan. 12. We have had close matches with Stouffville tying both previous games. This was a close checking affair with many turnovers in the neutral zone. It was Stouffville's forechecking and persistence that paid off when their fourth rebound netted the opening goal to close the first period. Goalie Mark Carnaghan and Leo Taillon played well to keep Port Perry's chances alive. Danny Halward and Derek Go- reski were solid on defense clearing the puck and Not until late in the third period would luck be on our side. Nelson Langmaid let go a hard wrist-shot from the blue line that deflected off Cassid He in turn, steered the puck over to Ashley Lucas for the tip in to tie it at one. Stouffville came roaring back to take the lead on a breakaway and that was how it Sunday, Jan. 14, Pearce Auction visited Lindsay to play the Muskies. Port Perry started sluggish and al- owed Lindsay a two goal lead. Kyle Mullins played his best this day, leading rush- es and smart passing to linemates Jeff Tomcheski and Keenan Geer. Kyle was rewarded for his efforts as Keenan sent him on a breakaway and Kyle picked Pearce Auction tried for the equalizer in the last minute but Lindsay got an empty netter for a 3-1 win. Weber.
