18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 16, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " SPORTS It's been almost a month since the league last played due to the Christ- mas holidays and last weekend's ringette tour- nament but there were still a couple of entertain- ing games played this Sunday in the local league. In game one of the day it was Trader Sam's squeak- ing out a close 2-1 over- ~ time victory over the Blackstock Brewers there- by getting them a point closer to the Brewers in the battle for third place in « thestandings. Blackstock notched the first marker late in the opening period with Tom Wotten and Dave Dalton setting up Al Bouwmeest- er. This held up until mid- way through the second half when Trader's tied it up on a goal by Gord Jones from Jerry Piels and Gene Woodrow. In the overtime the clincher was scored on a lone effort by Charlie 'Dennis. The Brooklin Bruins blanked the Stouffville Scorpions in game two by a 7-0 margin to keep their hold on first place overall. It was a big game for Wayne Tate as he was most of the offense, accu- mulating three goals and three assists for the Bruins. He was followed by Shawn Mitchell, Rob Mason, Nick Attwood, and Ron Attwood with single tallies each. Mason, "Mitchell and Ron also add- ed assists to their stats. Rounding out the points with assists of their own were Luc Collard, Perry and Jim Mason, as well as Don Jansma. Jim Raaphorst recorded his tenth shutout of the season out of the 15 games played thus far. The last game of the day was also a nail biter be- tween the Swampers and The Framer's Gallery as it looked like it was going to go the overtime route such as the first game. The Framers came out early in the game and gained .the scoreboard Broomball action resumes first with Brian Mikkel- sen ring In a screen shot from the blueline. Before the period had ended though, the Swampers were back in it as they tied it up on a goal from Brian Pomeroy with Dan Taylor drawing the assist. As stated above, it looked in the dying seconds as it overtime was imminent until with 2.6 seconds left on the clock Mike Mole put in the winner with help from Jason Price and Mike Butt. This weekend coming up will see the league host- ing their annual tourna- ment at Sunderland arena starting Friday evening. Five of the local six teams will see action on the first night starting at eight o'clock with Brooklin lead- ing off. They will be fol- lowed in order by Black- stock at 8:45 p.m., the Swampers at 9:30 p.m., the Framer's at 10:15 p-m., and Trader's at 11 p.m. The Scorpions will be up bright and early Satur- day facing offat 8:15 a.m. Nationals, Gators to compete International fastball coming By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Canada Day will hold . an extra attraction this year as International Fastball will take over the lakefront diamond. Once again Port Perry Minor Softball will host the international chal- lenge, this year between the Canadian National team and the Toronto Ga- | tors. Canada's National 1 team won the world cham- pionship last year and will be in Port just prior to a tour to Michigan, where they will defend that title. Canada's top players, including pitcher Darren Zack, Oshawa's Chris Jones, Larry Smith and Dave Hoffman, and all world player Marty Ker- naghan will be a part of the National team. The game will be played beginning at 2 p.m. at the north lakefront diamond. The street will be blocked off for the remain- der of the day to accommo- date bleachers and will re- ~ mained roped off for an extra safety measure dur- ing the fireworks display to Port Canada Day weekend in Palmer Park. "The fastball event is be- ing co-ordinated with the annual Canada Day week- end Fields of Dreams tour- nament and the Chamber of Commerce annual cele- brationsin the park. From Page 16 "I'm getting my legs back now and I feel com- fortable playing up," said Bricknell. Barry Toms and Chris Longfield replied for the Chiefs, who trailed by pe- riod scores of 2-1 and 3-2. In Sutton, the ModJacks | took charge early with a 2- 0 first-period lead and | they carried a 5-2 margin into the final stanza. Corey Bigras, Ryan Lad- | ner and Brent Breitrultz i scored for the Ice. Paul Roberts drew the gtarting assignment in the | Port Perry goal for a third ModJacks in hunt straight outing, giving cre- dence to the possibility the rotation of goaltenders which includes Rick Hutchinson might be off. Hutchinson was una- vailable for the Lakefield game due to a prior com- mitment. However, his shaky outing in Little Britain has possibly given the coaching tandem am- munition to start Roberts on a regular basis. Modacks entertain Bob- caygeon Bullets Thursday night (8:30 p.m.) and Ux- bridge Sunday evening (7 p.m.) WALLY WORLD: Jere- my Geer had the lone Mo- for first Jack goal in Little Britain and in Uxbridge, Keith Leslie sparkled with a three-goal effort. Todd Dennis and Ryan Speake rounded out the scoring. Former Bowmanville Ea- gles' player and Uxbridge Bruins castoff Derek An- derson has found a home in Port Perry. He has con- tributed offensively and even had an opportunity to showcase his boxing skills Saturday night while going toe to toe with Chiefs' Pascal Hill. Ryan Ridgway came out of Sat- urday's game with a rein- jured shoulder injury late in the second period. Country Style Bantams busy The Port Perry Bantam's, sponsored by Country Style Donuts located in Manchester, have been very busy of late with four games in the last week. Up first for Port was a game against the Oshawa Blackhawks of the Little N.H.L.. at the Children's Arena in Oshawa on Jan. 7. Port was in high gear and they got things rolling mid way through the period when Wyatt Park let go with a shot from the point, which found its way into the Oshawa goal. Set- ting up Wyatt on this goal was Shawn Hnatko. The second period was Port all the way as they were rewarded with four goals in this period for a commanding 5- 1 lead. Scoring the goals for Port were Danny Lyons, Derek Tindall, Scott Jef- ' frey and Jon Froats. Picking up assists were Adam Hobbs and Casey VanS- chagen with two each and singles going to Wyatt Park, Scott Jeffrey, Shawn Hnatko and Tyler Keeler. Casey VanSchagen capped off a solid 6-1 win with a goal in the third period set up by Jon Froats. Ryan Fraser played well in net for Port. Many thanks to Shawn Hnatko and Tylor Keeler from the Bantam No. 2 team for filling in for those players unable to at- tend. The next night back in the friendly confines of the Scugog Arena the Coun- try Style Bantams were up against Ux- bridge. The past month these boys have been playing serious hockey as they get prepared for the playoffs and Monday night was no different as they skated to a 4-0 win over the Uxbridge team. Port took the lead early in the first on a series of excellent passing plays. It was Dillan Weber to Adam Hobbs over | to Derek Tindall who put her home for the first goal. Port never looked back. Scott Jeffrey found the twine of the Ux- bridge net once in the first and again in the second for a 3-0 lead after two peri- ~ ods. Helping Scott on his first goal were Danny Lyons and Brad Johnston and the second was unassisted on a fine solo effort. The fourth goal in the third was scored by Dillan assisted by Derek Tin- dall and Casey VanSchagen to round off the 4-0 win for Port. Mike McLennan played a strong game in net for Port, earning the shutout and making a few sparkling glove saves. The following night, Jan. 9, the boys travelled to Lindsay to play a makeup game cancelled earlier in the season. Once again it was another solid perfor- mance as Port took this one 5-0. Five different boys contributed to the scor- ing as Brad Johnston, Jon Froats, Dave Gainey, Derek Tindall and Scott Jeffrey all scored the goals. Picking up assists on these goals were Troy Campbell with three, Dillan Weber with two and sin- gles going to Danny Lyons, Scott Jef- frey, Casey VanSchagen, Brad John- ston and Dave Gainey. Ryan Fraser played an excellent game in net for Port and thoroughly de- served the shutout. Capping off this whirlwind week was yet another game against Uxbridge on Jan. 14. In keeping with their record be- ing undefeated during this stretch the Port Country Style Bantams won this game handily 6-3. Details of the game were unavailable at press time. This concludes the regular league schedule and playoffs are tentatively scheduled to begin on Jan. 21 at the Scugog Arena for these Port Perry Bantams. Don't miss this exciting playoff action.
