12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 30, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Port Seniors meet Robbie remembered By Stan Rickard The Port Perry Seniors held their monthly pot luck dinner on Wednes- day, Jan. 24, the eve of Robert Burns birthday. Diners were greeted at the door by Grace Bassant and Jean Carnochan while Dorothy Butson super- vised the attendance reg- ister. Some of Robert Burns' songs were included in a sing-song led by Geoffrey Gilham with Edna Beck- ett at the piano. The Ivan Rodgers in- strumental group provid- ed some music of various origins and some seniors "tripped the light fantas- tic." Members were brought up to date on the February Se D ~ Engaged couples of the '90s are sophisticated and savvy, practical, yet very romantic. The majority take a traditional app- roach to wedding planning and almost all will make every effort to add unique, meaningful touches to their ceremonies. Here is a look at the new directions in weddings from the edi- tors of BRIDE'S Magazine: ° Mid-week weddings. Saturday evening remains a favorite time to marry, but an increasing number of couples are tying the knot at other times. Friday evening dinners and Sunday afternoon brunch- es are popular with cost- conscious couples, as are weddings during the mid- dle of the week. In the programs which included: Tours and Travels by Jacklyn Kerr, Line Danc- ing and Exercises by Myr- tle Bentley, Shuffleboard by Otto Bujtas, "66 Alive Driver Program" by Stan Rickard. The choir with Edna Beckett and the Eu- chre Club with Grant Bright are also very ac- tive. The recent installation of stage drapes has greatly enhanced the setting for programs performed on the stage. The installation of these drapes, by Sea- grave Interiors, was suc- cessfully completed by means of a cooperative ar- rangement between the seniors and the Munici- pality of Scugog. summer months. mid- week weddings are also a favorite of guests whose weekend plans limit their availability. * Dinner by the bite. Multi-course dinners are replaced by cocktail recep- tions, where guests enjoy a mix of hot and cold passed hors d'oeuvres and visit carving stations, pasta bars and other buffet tables filled with bite-sized foods. Appetizer-only par- ties can be tailored to fit every couple's budget and are also well-liked by guests, who enjoy the opportunity to socialize. * A menu of choices. Beef is making a comeback as the meat of choice at wedding receptions, sur- . passing the ubiquitous chicken. Veal and salmon are also preferred entrees. Couples concerned with animal rights are offering guests a vegetarian alternative. * Throw-away bou- quets. Gone are the days when brides threw the bouquets they carried down the aisle after the reception. Today, a smaller version of the bride's bou- quet is tossed to the crowd while the original is safely stored until it can be pro- fessionally preserved as a keepsake. e Bridal blossoms. Wreaths and garlands at the reception entrance welcome guests to the festivities. e Perfect pictures. Today, couples meet with their photographer several days before the wedding to take in-studio portraits. The controlled setting allows for memorable pic- tures in ideal lighting con- ditions. Free from wedding day jitters, couples relax and appear natural. When the wedding day arrives, the photographer is then able to concentrate on cap- turing the ceremony, bri- dal party and candid shots.
