"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" 26- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 30, 1996 SPORTS Goreski in tourney action The Goreski Peewees travelled to Kingston on Saturday in adverse weather conditions to compete in the Ernestown Jets Peewee Tournament. The teams first game was against the "A" team from Kingston who took a quick 2-0 lead in the first two command of the third peri- od and won the game 7-2. The guys had to lace up the skates again for a third time that day to play against an inspired King- ston "B" team. It was a Carr, McGarry and Gar- nett, but with a couple of unlucky bounces at the end of the game the King- ton t i Ladies Wednesday won 5a prevailed and Afternoon Jan. 24. Team Standings: Everybody played great see-saw battle all through the game with goals by all. all day and fun was had by minutes of the game. Dar- ren Royle turned the game around with a hard slap shot from just over the blue line, to bring our boys within one goal. That set the pace and our boys held a forechecking and back- checking clinic which re- sulted in the Seagrave line of McGarry, Carr, and . Moynes scoring four goals, a hat trick by McGarry and a single by Carr. Mike Koury had to be sharp be- tween the pipes to fend off Kingston's offensive at- tack with their goalie pulled and time running out. Eventually our boys won 5-4. e second game of the . day" was against a very strong team from Napan- ee. The game was tied 2-2 with the end of the second with nice goals by Matt Skerratt and Mike Lefort. The Napanee team proved Lumbermen win 11-6 For the third week in a row, Scugog Lumber and the Lions Club faced off in Atom House League play. In a hard fought game, the Lumbermen came out on top again, this time by a score of 11-6. Despite a 6 a.m. start, both teams came out fired up and ready to play. The first two periods were a back and forth affair, and it wasn't until the third that Scu- gog was able to put the game out of reach. Led by centre Matt Kamminga, who scored four goals and assisted on one, and Teddy Howarth, who put three into the Lions net, Scugog was able to get by a Lions team that refused to quit. The first ended with Scugog up 3-2, but the second saw the Lions fight back and take a 5-4 lead on goals by Joseph Koz- linsky, Ryan O'Leary and John Kyle. Kamminga tied the game with four minutes left in the period, and nine seconds later Howarth gave Scugog the lead again. Kyle scored his second just 11 seconds later to tieit up again. : The third belonged to Scugog with good positional play and hustle resulting in five unanswered goals. Reid Harris, Howarth and Kamminga added singles as did Travis Black and Michael Whalen, who made a great rush from his defensive position to score. This was another exciting game from two teams who put forth a great effort. Next week both teams will be playing in a tournament in Bewdley. No doubt to be too strong and took both will represent Port Perry well. Rosebuds 34, Bubblies 29, Nutcrackers 26, Buttercups 22, Glaciers 20, Shells 17.
