Rural commu- nities also feel the effects of abuse. However, current solu- tions, programs, services, or prevention are at times not consistent with the unique geographical char- actenstics, or farm and ru- ral values. Without mini- mizing the severity of the problem or the shattered lives involved, opportuni- ties for a community re- sponse to this social prob- lem exists within the positive networks of the rural community. The Ontario Farm Women's Network (OFWN)is addressing this issue with just such a con- cept in mind. The OFWN 1s developing an approach for promoting a communi- ty-based response to the problem of domestic abuse in rural communities. A pilot project funded by the Trillium Foundation will train facilitators in 10 regions across Ontario who, in turn, will train in- dividuals from within lo- cal communities. It 1s these local people who will become facilitators of com- munity workshops, coali- tion creation and strategy building. The OFWN is currently at the stage of contacting individuals for the facilita- tor role in the 10 regions. Many agencies and indi- viduals have indicated in- terest. Anyone interested in more details of the pro- Ject or becoming involved in the project can contact: The Rural Abuse Project, Box 61, Belmont, Ontario, NOL 1BO.
