Current research being conducted includes the development of intra-uterine surgery to correct heart defects before birth; the identification of genes involved in the development of cardiovascular risk factors; the development of drugs given after strokes to prevent brain damage; experiments in growing human heart cells; and a better under- standing of the role of estrogen in the development of heart disease in women. Sixty per cent of all money raised go directly to research, while the remaining is spent on fundrais- ing, health promotion and administration. Research in Ontario has led to several breakthroughs reducing mortality from the disease. Knowing the warning signs of the disease are the first step to improving your odds. The major signs of a heart attack include an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or dis- 'comfort in the centre of the chest behind the breast- bone, which may spread to the shoulder, neck or arms (pain may not be severe). Other signals include sweating, nausea, shortness of breath and a feeling of weakness. These signs may appear in combination. The warnings signs of stroke include sudden weakness or numbness and or tingling of the face, arm or leg, which may be brief, sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech, sudden loss of vision, particularly in one eye, and a sudden, severe, unusual headache. This year's campaign, beginning February 1, is co-chaired locally by Gwen Taylor, Joyce Storry, Judy Smith and Dorothy Gibson. There are 21 captains who help to co-ordinate 160 canvassers in the areas of Port Perry, Prince Albert, Greenbank, Seagrave, Manchester, Scugog Iasnd, Robinglade Estates, Castle Harbor and the idges. The Blackstock, Epsom and Utica areas raise their own funds through Jump Rope For Heart campaigns. Funds will also be raised again this year through coin boxes, which will be located in many local businesses and through the sale of "Simply Heart Smart Cooking", a cookbook. It is on sale for $19.95 at Big V Drug Store, Port Perry Star and From My Heart. SMITHFIELD PRODUCTIONS presents ELDORADO! The Hilarious and Dramatic Yukon Sagas of Robert W.
