Once more to all those that put up with the cold and the damp, our can- vassers, you have all of our heartfelt thanks. Geoff Taylor, Public Relations, Branch 419 Congrats! As a teacher at S.A. Cawker, I would like to share a thought about an event that happened before our holiday break. The Grade 8's at school operate pizza days to raise money to enrich our different programs in each divi- sion. As a reward for forts they receive a monetary reward that 18 customarily used for a class trip or party. After a discussion of possible proposals, the class operating the lunches during the term approached me with their decision on where the money should go. I must say that I was very pleased that the overall vote by the class was to donate their earnings to Oper- ation Scugog. John Lewis, S.A. CawkerP.S. their organizational ef- | Drivers should be wary of tow truck operators To the Editor: You have been involved in an accident or your trusty car has quit miles from anywhere. All you can see are tow trucks. Pushy drivers with greedy eyes are trying to per- suade you to use their ser- vices, perhaps promising all sorts of things or warn- ing you about other tow- er'scharges. Beware: These opera- tors are the wolves. Often your vehicle will end up in Toronto or even Barrie, and the charges are outra- geous. It is illegal for a tow truck to stop within 200 metres of an accident scene unless it is evident that help is required, oth- er than towing. The law sets out a penalty for solic- iting towing from an indi- vidual involved in an acci- dent. Sadly, our police detachments are under staffed and do not have time to charge all of these "chasers." If you do not have a tow- ing company that you use or a road service that you can contact that covers ac- cident towing, wait until the officer arrives and ask him or her to contact their + contracted tower if the oc- currence is on a Durham Regional patrolled road or a DRTA tow truck for oc- currences on the Queen's roads. Recently a new associa- tion was formed by estab- lished tow companies in Durham Region who were on alist used by the OPP's, Whitby detachment, for tow trucks needed at acci- dent scenes, breakdowns and abandoned vehicles. The roads patrolled by Whitby OPP are divided into zones and the tow companies in the associa- Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. The Durham Region Towing Association is reg- ulated by the tow compa- nies and has the approval of the Whitby detachment of the OPP Equipment, skill, insurance and de- portment standards have been established. There is a fee schedule setting out top fees for specific servic- es often required at an ac- cident, breakdown or abandoned vehicle. Any complaints of over- charging or bad conduct by members are investi- gated and disciplinary ac- tions will be taken if justi- fied. Under most circum- stances you have a choice of destination for your ve- hicle. It is always advisa- ble to speak to the driver before giving a drop off point because payment is required when a vehicle is dropped unless the drop point is the tower's pound. Receipts will be issued for any payments made to the tow truck driver for reim- bursement by your insu- rance company, should in- surance be covering the accident. We would suggest that if you are having your ve- hicle dropped at a repair centre or collision repair place that you opt for a shop in Durham Region. There are highly skilled professionals in all areas of Durham who will do re- pairs accurately and with pride. They will purchase the needed parts from oth- er Durham Region busi- nesses and this keeps the economical cycle turning right here at home. If you have a breakdown or are involved in 'an acci- dent remember: a Call your own tow truck or auto club. 0 Don't automatically accept the first tow truck to badger or threaten you, whatever their spiel. The chaser tow truck has no authority. a Wait for an OPP offi- cer or a DRP officer to call a DRTA or contracted truck 0 Don't sign anything at the scene for the tow truck driver, except a call slip for your auto club. 0 Be aware that you can usually have your vehicle dropped anywhere you wish. Speak to the driver. Know where your vehicle is being taken. 0 Please have a local Durham Region shop do the repairs on your vehi- cle.
