16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 6, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Sometimes, you don't know how much you can accomplish until you try. So when the local municipal council teamed up with man- agement at The Beer Store to collect used sports equipment as a Waste Reduction Week promotion, they couldn't have imagined the results. The people of Scugog gave the program a resounding response, and the benefits will soon be felt by kids living in Ontario's far north, according to Ward 1 Councillor Doug Moffatt, who was council coor- ~ dinator for Waste Reduction Week, back in November. bh "There are hundreds of pieces of equipment," he said last week in announcing plans to send it to impoverished northern communities. "It's a really nice thing: (The Beer Store) did it so well." The project was dubbed Reduce, Reuse and Replay, and saw a box set up at the Port Beer Store where customers could drop off their old skates, pads, helmets, and other sport- ing gear. It was given some play in the local media, and soon the equipment was piling up. In fact, the box was filled and refilled a number of times before the promotion was con- cluded. When it was all done, Councillor Moffatt and council colleague Ken Gadsden (Ward 3) took a jam-packed pick-up truck load away from The Beer Store, and found a storage place for it in downtown Port Perry. Then it was time to find a way to distribute the stuff. Councillor Moffatt mentioned it to Regional councillor Marilyn Pearce, who in turn told a friend at Port Perry United Church. She was soon on the computer internet, where a church-based home page collects and distributes information. She soon heard back from the Mennonite Central Committee in Timmins, which distributes much-needed equipment and other supplies to far-flung native settlements in the north. "They were just ecstatic we would even think about it," said Councillor Moffatt. Councillor Moffatt has since made arrangements from the Ontario Trucking Association to move the material to Timmins, and from there it will be flown to the communi- ties where kids are waiting for it. Lyndsay Mollins Koene, a worker with the Mennonite Central Committee in Timmins, said donations such as the one being sent from Port are much-appreciated. She and her husband Job are youth and crisis intervention workers, serving a vast area that includes more than 45 commu- nities of varying sizes in the north. "These bits of equipment will be going to the far north communities," she said last week. "I think it's very impor- tant." Many of the remote commu- nities are in short supply of many of the items that could Local program sees equipment sent to far north help with recreation and edu- cation, and her committee works closely with the Ojibway Cree Cultural Centre 1n Timmins to ensure that they get them when they are avail- able. The donations from Port Perry will be well-received in communities where there is invariably an arena or open- air rink, and virtually everyone is involved in either broomball or hockey, said Mrs. Mollins Koene. She added that other sup- plies, including crafts and edu- cational supplies, are always welcome. Anyone who would like to make further donations to communities in the north can call the Ojibway Cree Cultural Centre at (705) 268- 9033.
