"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 6, 1996 - 21 <d J RTS J. PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR Welcome another Midget 1 update. The team has been very busy with exams as well as getting ready for playoffs. With back to back games last week, we Started off the playoffs up against a tough Lindsay squad. We travelled to Lind- say to start the best of three series. The team was pumped up and ready to hit the ice. Espe- cially #99 Jay Strickert who had a pair of points CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY - A Port Perry team won the A Event Championship at a bonspiel sponsored by Howey Kitchens, Antrim House and The Investors Group Saturday. Scott Howey, sponsor of the A Event is seen here presenting the trophy to Garnet Warriner, skip, Gale Ballard, vice skip, Bill Cornish, 2nd on the night (must of been the fun dip). The team started fast getting on the board first. G-ray and Sandy Greenwood, lead. Atom As kept busy Malmont Farms took to the ice Friday night for their third game in as many nights. They came up short losing 6-3 to Oshawa. The first period was scoreless with Mark Dun- can drilling a shot off the _ crossbar, but just seven seconds into the second Oshawa drew first blood. Late in the second Spen- cer Churchill stole a face- off and passed it to the birthday boy Kevin Robins who one timed it into the Oshawa net. Justin Mof- fatt scored unassisted to tighten the score but Oshawa rebounded with a couple of goals to lengthen their lead. Kevin Robins scored his second goal as- sisted by Jamie with 6:13 left on the clock to close out Port Perry's scoring. Mark Lott played strongly in goal as did Ste- vie MacLennon and Derek Bond on defense. On Sunday, Feb. 4 the Atom 1 team travelled to Oshawa for a rematch they came away with an impressive 4-2 win with strong work and aggres- sive play by everyone. Es- pecially Justin Moffatt who "shadowed" the Oshawa teams "Big Gun" thru-out the game, and Scott Honey was strong between the pipes. nor penalty, The Canadian Tire Midget "B" Is- landers played two playoff games last week against Lindsay winning both and eliminating Lindsay from further play. The Islanders now face the win- ner between Belleville and Markham. The Islanders first game was Jan. 30 in Lindsay. This game seemed to be a bit slow with neither team getting many scoring chances in the early go- ing. Finally it would be the Islanders to strike first as Ryan Puckrin con- verted on a nice passing play from Scott Heffern and Ashley Van Shelvan to take a 1-0 lead. Late in the period Adam Hunter gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead with assists going to Matt Phil- lips and Trevor Smith. The second was once again all Is- landers as they picked up two more goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Doing the scoring in this period were Adam Smith from Aaron Levy and Ga- vin Baxter and Adam Hunter with his second from T. Smith and Phillips. The third had one goal scored on a nice solo effort by Baxter to round out the scoring, a 5-0 win for the Island- ers. The defensive pairings of Mike Morden with T. Smith and Noah Dor- land with Chris Drury did an excel- lent job in making the Lindsay shoot- ers fire from outside, not letting any chances come from in close. Brian Bickmore was sharp in net when called upon, registering the shutout. The second encounter came on Feb. 2 in Port and Lindsay had their backs against the wall as they had to have a Midget Bs advance win or their season would be finished. But a person could sense that Lindsay was doomed as once again Lloyd had the peanuts flowing in the stands, the crowd was excited, the warm-up music was loud and most important the Is- landers were fired up and ready. The first was all Islanders as they scored first and often. Getting the Is- landers started was Dave Kamminga as he redirected one into the net with Heffern and Dorland setting things up. Then it would be Phillips firing one in from A. Smith and Kamminga. Finally rounding out the first period scoring was Levy with Hunter and Baxter drawing assists. This gave the hometown Islanders a large 4-0 lead. In the second the Islanders contin- ued to roll along as they picked three goals to take a 7-0 lead. Scoring for the Islanders were Phillps from Levy and Morden, Hunter the playoff scor- ing machine with his second of the game from Todd Parry and Hunter. In the third Lindsay pressed hard to get a goal but they couldn't get one past the Islanders goaltender Doug Short who had a strong game in pick- ing up the shutout. The Islanders rounded out the scoring as Levy hit the net with one of his patented howit- zers that literally blew the glove off the Lindsay goalie and went in. As- sisting on the play were Morden and T. Smith. Congratulations to the Is- lander team as the entire team played a strong series. Job well done men. scored as he let a heat- seeking missile of T.C.'s neck and into the top shelf. During two min- utes of a Colin Laird mi- Strickert, using his wheels, made a quick lane change around the Lindsay defender and popped home a short handed tally. Next to score was the line of Strickert, Phoenix and Logan, also known as the legion of doom. Strickert . finished off the play with his second. Picking up helpers were Logan and Phoenix. In the third the team picked up a couple more unanswered mark- ers from G-ray. His sec- ond goal of the night came on the power play when he and Hobbsy went down on a two on none. Hobbsy was wide open. The only thing G- ray had in mind for Hobbsy was using him for a decoy and sniped it into the top shelf. G-ray wasn't done yet as he slid one more home to com- plete the Hat Trick Johnny-B played electri- fying between the pipes. HOT!!! picking up his 31st shutout of the year. Final score 5-0. The following night was do or die as hit the ice for game two. Lindsay scored first, then we woke up. First to score was Hobbsy, helped out by Mr. B. Shanley. Next was T. C. who was helped out by G-ray. Tom added another to his huge col- lection of goals, picking up assists were Carl and Jeff Clarke. We swept the series sending Lind- say to the links. This weeks' player pro- file is on Kevin Gray. G- ray likes to use his Koho Street Revolution Hockey Stick while sending the pucks high into the nets. Midgets sweep series They have to re-enforce the nets in Port Perry I tell ya!! G-ray the leading scorer on the team, sweetest moves you'll ever see. G-ray 1s not a mean guy, but if you're in his way when he's on the move you are gonna get hurt. G-ray can pick the top corner like you and I can pick apples from a tree. A true sniper. For some particular reason whenever G-ray scores we seem to have a better record. Come cheer G-ray and the rest of the guys on as we play throughout the playoffs. Read local papers for game times.
