"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 6, 1996 - 23 SPORTS MoJacks humble Ice with 7-2 victory By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star The MoJacks ate pizza, dem- onstrated their physical prow- ess "before" the national an- them, melted the Ice and proceeded to help themselves to a well-deserved second serving of pizza. Despite their noted craving for this popular Italian entree (hold the anchoves, please), there was nothing flat about the way ModJacks humbled Georgi- na Ice 7-2 Saturday night at Scugog Arena. It started with a player pre- game meal at a local pizza res- taurant, no doubt designed to get the boys together for the purpose of planning their long range goals. On the ice for warmups, a stray puck inside Georgina ter- ritory was the focus of Port Perry's Chad Kearns, who delved into forbidden land and the result was expected. Several skirmishes ensued, leaving team management from both sides having to bring peace before a minor hockey night crowd. Once the game started, it was all business. Todd Dennis stamped the ModJdacks' inten- tions with the first goal just 35 seconds into the Central Onta- rio Junior C Hockey League contest. 7 Modacks constructed a 4-0 lead just past the midway point of the game before the Ice re- sponded with two goals 1:43 apart, "a couple I should have had," remarked goalie Paul Roberts long after the final whistle." The win pretty well assures Modacks second place and as for the Ice, their post-season berth still looks promising, although the Lakefield Chiefs are at- tempting to keep the small flame flickering. Modacks have two games re- maining and as it stands, they will play Little Britain Mer- chants in the first round of playoffs while first-place Ux- bridge Bruins gear up for the Ice. Modacks have played amaz- ing hockey of late, which is pre- cisely what the coaching statt wants to see as the playoffs loom in the not-too-distant hori- zon. Keith Leslie - the league's ton pointman - has been a tower of strength, finishing off this night with a noteworthy two goals and an assist. With home games against Bobcaygeon Bullets Thursday night and the Ice on Sunday closing out the regular sched- ule, Leslie needs three points to reach the century mark and three goals to achieve the 50- goal plateau. Leslie completed an excellent feed from Steve Barkwell for Port Perry's second goal and late in the second period, the top sniper tipped in a goalmouth pass from Mike Pigeau to give ModJacks a 5-2 advantage. "I'd like to see Keith reach his goals. He deserves them," beamed ModJacks' coach Chic Carnegie, "and I'll be double shifting him the next two games." Kenton LeFort, Pigeau, Den- Bremner each chipped in single tallies. Mike Hewitt and Brett Breitkreutz replied for the Ice who, despite the goals, received a strong goaltending effort by John Zieger. He was left on his own more times than he would care to recall. Because of the gritty play of his defense, Roberts wasn't faced with a similar situation. Indeed, the ModJacks confined the Ice to a mere 18 shots over the three periods. "I wanted them coming out and checking like a unit, doing the things they'll have to do against Little Britain," said Carnegie. "The defensive corps are play- ing terrific, but they're being left on their own a little too much. We still need better back- checking from everyone." There hasn't been a dearth of goals from he Port Perry squad. One of the picture goals was scored by Bremner who, cutting across the goalmouth, lifted the puck under the crossbar in one motion. It's an effort like this nis, Ryan Ridgway and Trevor 1: ould take the Modacks over the top. Back in the dressing room and wiping towels over their foreheads, the players were treated to more pizza, an oppor- tunity not missed by a single player...or management for that matter. WALLY WORLD - Corey Bricknell, who has been shuf- fled from defence to the forward lines, was back at centre, giving ModJacks a threatening second line combination. The MoJacks' management is wise, so perhaps it took a good look at this minor hockey Saturday night crowd, loaded with youngsters who didn't have to worry about school the next day and the ac- companying parents whose work schedules were still two days away. Get the message??? Fans saw some entertaining ac- tion between the first two peri- ods as selected minor players applied their scoring expertise against ModJacks' goaltenders Paul Roberts and Rick Hutchin- son.
