PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 6, 1996 -5 "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Meeting is next Tuesday at Latcham Centre Scugog council wants your vision of the future. The township is hosting a meeting next Tuesday night (Feb. 13) at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry to gather input of the report by Anne Golden's task force on the future of the Greater Toronto Area as they prepare to respond to its recommendations. The sweeping report calls for reforms to municipal boundaries, taxation and government. It recommends, among other things, scrapping the five regional governments that now exist in the GTA, and creating a new level of gov- ernment to oversee the area, as well as re-evaluating property taxation for residents and business in the GTA. What role Scugog might have in t new configuration has not been clearly defined, but local politicians are leery of such restructuring. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall has repeatedly condemned the recommendations as a tax grab by Metro Toronto. Township seeks residents' view on future of the GTA In a submission to the taskforce last fall, Scugog councillors recommended leaving the current regional govern- ment system in place. Those who want to speak at the meeting are asked to call 985-7393 to register with township administrator Earl Cuddie before Friday (Feb. 9). A limited number of submissions will be heard, and they will be restricted to eight minutes in length. Those unable to make oral submis- sions at the meeting are encouraged to send in their thoughts in written form. The evening will get under way at 7:30 with an overview of the report, and at 8 o'clock submissions will begin. A question period will start at 9 p.m, with adjournment at 10. Durham East MPP John O'Toole also hopes to have a session on the GTA report in Port Perry Thursday (Feb. 15), but has yet to set a place and time for the meeting. ASP set to open new store From Page 1 that some aspects of an agreement have yet to be worked out. "As soon as I know we have a signed deal, we will make it known officially," said Mr. Sheine. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall confirmed last week that the company has workers on the site of the Dowson's store, preparing it for opening later this winter. Dowson's closed its doors early in January, and it's been rumored since then that A&P was eyeing the location. Meanwhile, the town- ship is still working with Valu Mart's parent com- pany, National Grocer, on site plan particulars for a large new store across the highway from Dowson's on the old Conway proper- ty. National Grocer wants to open its new Port loca- tion by next fall. Mayor Hall said Friday the new Food Basics store could be a reality here soon. "They hope, I under- stand, to be back in busi- ness in the next six to eight weeks," he said. Since the building, the largest in the Scugog St. plaza, is already zoned for "a supermarket operation, and no extensive exterior renovations are planned, A&P wouldn't need town- PORT PERRY DENTAL OFFICE INSURANCE ASSIGNMENT ACCEPTED 8 EVENING APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE (WE COLLECT FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES) DENTISTRY WHILE YOU SLEEP - MW PAYMENT PLANS ARRANGED HM SENIOR CITIZENS DISCOUNT BW GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AVAILABLE NEW PATIENTS WELCOME 085-8459 @ PAXTON ST. Mr. Sheine said that Food Basics is designed to be a low-cost alternative to shoppers, offering them a more limited selection of products. The store have proven popular -- 10 are currently in operation -- and more openings are planned in the future, he said. "We've been opening them at an accelerated rate," said Mr. Sheine.
