"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 13, 1996 -9 By end of February Job kiosk will be moved to library The job bank kiosk, which has been available for the public at the Agricultural Employment Service office on Water St. for the past cou- ple of years, will be staying in Port Perry. Rolly Coy, manager of the employment service, announced Jag week, the kiosk will be moved gi to Scugog Memorial Library by the end of this month. ROLLY COY The decision to move the kiosk was necessary due to the expected closure of the local Agricultural Employment Service later this year. Mr. Coy was pleased that negotiations with the the library board, Tom Bonnano, C.E.O., and strong sup- | port from Mayor Howard Hall councillor Ken Carruthers resulted in this decision. He said that although the equipment is designed to be self supporting and user friendly, he was concerned that there is still a very definite need for additional assistance to the rural community that is not being met or understood. "People living outside the heavily populated areas to the south are at a real disadvantage when compet- ing for jobs, and accessibility to employment advice, information and assistance," he said. Mr. Coy feels there is a real feed for assistance beyond what volunteers are able to provide and a "do it yourself" situation is just not good enough. Many communities, with government assistance, are devel- oping a resource centre where various community groups can provide assistance and information. These "one stop" centres can assist with varied forms of support such as preparation for job search, resumes, interviews, training as well as assisting employers with human resource management, labor exchange, etc. From Page 8 there no one anywhere in the civil service who are interested in doing their jobs? No wonder we're $500 billion in the hole. Stand by for a trillion if this 1s the way we are going to operate. Surely, I am not the only one awake here! And please don't blame the unions any more than you blame the inmates if a prison is not being run properly. Who is in charge of this show? Anyone" The "Peter" principle must be alive and well in this country. Try and remember that the people responsible for this type of service are the same ones who are telling us we must tighten our belt, compete, etc... I recall many years ago when Mike Starr was Minister of Labor, during one of the major layoffs in Oshawa, with lineups of people around the block LUMPY'S LAUNDROMAT Opening Later This Week Keep an eye out for Li no later than Sriday, but sooner if possible. He walked in the office, stood with hands on hips in the middle of the floor and announced in a loud voice that if the process didn't speed up, he would fire the whole bunch of them. Things moved well after that, I assure you. By the way, Mr. Editor, I vote Liberal. Thank you for letting me sound off. R.J.
