Patti Goreski, Execu- tive Director of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Durham will be giv- ing a presentation on the organization's goals and community efforts. Eva Blythe, the Executive Di- rector of the YWCA in Oshawa, and Joyce Emer- son, Co-ordinator for the Apple Community Project will also be on hand. Apple is an acronym for Ajax Pickering Protected Living Environment. There will be a question and answer period. This community event will take place in the To- kai room at the Uxbridge Urges locals to write, sign petition Woman starts campaign for tougher impaired law By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star It's time to do something about impaired driving. That's the message that Vivian O'Neill of Blackstock wants to take to the people of Scugog and, eventually, the lawmakers of Ontario. She said she has become increasingly angered at the continuing incidents of drunks causing injury and death on the highways, despite stepped-up infor- mation campaigns, and police efforts to cut down on impaired driving. The true devastation of drinking and driv- ing has been driven home for her recent- ly with the passing of friends in alcohol- . related accidents. She wants her friends and neighbors in Scugog to tell provincial Attorney General Charles Harnick that it's time to toughen laws, and send those con- victed in fatal impaired accidents to jail for longer sentences. "I think everyone's got to stop sitting back and allowing it to happen," said Mrs. O'Neill, who wrote an emotional letter to the editor which was published in last Friday's Weekend Star. "I just feel it's something [ want to do, and take a stand on."She insists that people aren't deterred from climb- ing into their vehicles after drinking because the penalties aren't particu- larly stiff, even if they kill someone. She added that the pain that results from an impaired driving fatality is widespread: "It's not just the people who have been killed; it's everyone around them. People have to start thinking about that." Mrs. O'Neill will be circulating peti- tions throughout the community calling for tougher drinking and driving laws, and also hopes to encourage folks here to write to Mr. Harnick. She said the government -- which is imposing fund- ing cuts on already-strapped police forces -- needs to hear from the elec- torate that the fight against impaired driving should remain a high priority. "Please send your message to (Mr. Harnick)," she urged. "We've got to change the situation in some way." Letters can be addressed to Charles Harnick at 720 Bay St., 11th Floor, Toronto, M5G 2K1.
