2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 13, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Local men rack up a total of 383 years service Firefighters receive Exemplary Service Awards Scugog honored a few of its finest during a ceremo- ny last Thursday night (Feb. 8). Fourteen present and former firefighters were presented with medals and plaques marking their receipt of the federal government's Fire Servic- es Exemplary Service Award for their many years of dedication to the local department. Council chambers in Port Perry were packed for the ceremony, which saw Durham MP Alex Shep- herd offering his congratu- lations and thanks to the men who have given, among them, a combined total of 383 years of ser- vice. Mr. Shepherd noted that over the years the na- ture of firefighting has changed to include a num- ber of services; it's not just putting out burning build- ings anymore, he said. "The whole aspect of firefighting has dramati- cally changed, and it's created new dangers these gentlemen must deal with day in and out," he said. Fire chief Richard Mill- er said the township and the department owe a great deal of thanks to the men receiving the honors. "The people who do this just give so much of them- selves," he said. The chief also offered special thanks to the wives and mates of fire- fighters, whose lives are also given over to the de- partment's activities. "They have to put up th the same stuff we do," he said. "The four o'clock calls, the tragic fires we have to bring home the bad news from." And Scugog Mayor Ho- ward Hall highlighted the fact that local firefighters are volunteers, upon whom the community has come to depend. "Volunteers are very im- portant to our community, and to every community," he said. "There was never a time we couldn't count on them." Firefighters who re- ceived their medals (with years of service) were: Corporation. playedit. purchased.
