One argument goes that the province would never create the huge, 32-member GTA council called for in the report to replace the several regions that now make up the GTA. That would create a body that would rival the province of Ontario in size and power, some say, so the Tories would never okay it. An alternative argument is that the Conservatives promised before being elected that one of their goals would be to reduce government. Along comes the Golden report, with the specifics on how to do it. And then along comes Bill 26, the legislation that enables the province to make those changes. ; = 8 Merely speculating on what the government @ T= may or may not do is a waste of time, AT es} / particularly now. Consider: It's estimated that creation of the GTA super-municipality would result in a 21 per cent tax increase for Scugog homeowners.
