"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 20, 1996 -9 Students will be allowed to smoke on school property By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Students at local high schools will legally be al- lowed to move back unto school property to smoke cigarettes. Scugog Township Coun- cil supported The City of Oshawa's recommenda- tion that the Tobacco Con- trol Act, 1994, be amended to allow school adminis- trators with the flexibility to accommodate smoking within school property when required. In November, 1994 the Tobacco Act was pro- claimed by the Provincial Government deciding that with smoking becoming less sociably acceptable the ban would discourage young people from taking up the habit, saying that people do not generally be- gin smoking after the age of 20. The law, which took effect in January, 1995, among other things, pro- hibited smoking on school property. Port Perry High Schoot students, in particular, began smoking off school property and the result created problems for near- by residents. Neighbors began com- plaining about students . loitering on private prop- erty, that the large groups of youths were interfering with ther vision when ex- iting their driveways and that they were leaving lit- ter behind on their proper- ty. Several Oshawa schools were facing the same complaints from their neighboring resi- dents. The Durham Board of Education stated, al- though they do not con- done smoking and under- stand the health risks involved, they wanted the amendment. The Board requested a designated smoking area to help alle- viate these problems. Ward 5 Councillor Kar- en Puckrin reinforced that point to township council last week, before passing their resolution, saying they are by no means con- doning smoking by pass- ing this resolution, but are supporting the school board's request. Club to determine if hall is worth saving By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Port Perry Kinsmen Hall's future isin question according to Kinsmen Club president Tony Foggetti. Mr. Foggetti, who was at council last week seeking permission for the use of the hall to sell fireworks in May, said the money raised will go towards paying debts of the local service club. The Kinsmen hall, located on Simcoe Street, will be looked at in the near future to deem if it is worth sav- ing. If the answer is yes, a plan of attack will be formed, he said. The club is used by the Kinsmen as well as other user groups such as the Scouts and Brownies. The groups will undertake fundraisers if the hall is deemed worth saving. First on the list of repairs will be a new roof, fol- lowed by new windows and piece by piece interior work.
