"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 20, 1996 -19 PORT PERRY Pp PORT PERRY STAR 4 SPORTS Peewee playoff action The Port Perry Peewee 'A" Legion- naires and the Cobourg Peewee A' team have had "barnburner" games all through the season and this weekend continued the same tradition as they each won one game. Home ice advan- tage has meant nothing so far, as Port Perry won in Cobourg and Cobourg won in Port Perry. The Legionnaires travelled to Co- bourg on Friday, Feb. 16 and came home with a 3-2 overtime victory to take a one game lead in the series. Asin the past, this game was a closely fought affair. Cobourg leaped into the lead first with a goal right from the opening faceoff however, the Legionnaires did not give up and kept working hard. Chris Monsma had an outstanding game in goal and kept his team in the game time and time again as Cobourg controlled the play. Cobourg was unable to pot another though and finally Port Perry was re- warded with a power play goal late in the second to tie the game. Jason Whit- "worth, Mark Blakley, and Dean Van Camp had had some excellent chances on an earlier power play, but the Co- bourg goalie had turned them away. This time, though, Matt MacMaster nayigated his way through the Cobourg defence and the rebound from his shot was fired into the net by Braden Tarbot- ton to tie the game 1-1. The third period saw Cobourg take | the lead again but two minutes later David Justynski blasted a shot from the point. The rebound filtered back out to Grant Hooker on the other point. The rebound from his shot was shovelled by behind the goalie to even the score again. The Legionnaires desperately want- ed to hang on and try their luck in over- time. Chris Monsma allowed this to happen when a bad bounce gave Co- bourg a breakaway with just a minute left in the game. Chris made an awe- some save!!! The tension in the overtime period was incredible but when Steve Wygerde wound up a big shot past the Cobourg goalie, the Port Perry fans went wild! Chris Skerratt and Scott Brownson as- sisted on the goal. Nice to see Steve re- warded for his hard work!! The Legionnaires now had the advan- tage with a win and Cobourg having to come to their ice to play. However, as was mentioned, home ice didn't mean a thing, as Cobourg waltzed to a 3-1 win. The Legionnaires were unable to get a consistent offence mounted and some ill-timed penalties interfered with their attack. Matt MacMaster scored the Le- gionnaires only goal on a goalmouth scramble. Braden Tarbotton and Dean Van Camp assisted on the goal. This goal tied the game 1-1 at the end of the first, however, Cobourg scored two more unanswered goals in the second that would stand until the end of the game. Chris Monsma was in net for the Legionnaires and came up with several great saves including one from point blank range! This win by Cobourg ties the series and sends the Legionnaires back to Co- bourg on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for the third and final game. Hopefully, the "home ice jinx" will work again. Good luck Legion- naires!! i ececsecsios all 2 ) | KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR The Second Annual Port Perry Star Coach of the Year awards were pre- sented last weekend. As in zilch. As in the number of hockey games the Port Perry Modacks have won in Little Britain this sea- son against those pesky Merchants. Winless in three regular season outings, the trend continued once more for the Modacks last Satur- day evening, dropping a 6- 5 road decision to square the best of seven Central Ontario Junior C semi- final playoff series at a game a piece. Modacks drew the pro- verbial first blood one Auctioneer Action Blakley over to Whitworth who put it Islanders handed first playoff loss by Belleville The Port Perry Canadi- an Tire Midget "B" hockey team travelled to the Cow- palace in Belleville on Sat- urday, Feb. 17 where they were handed their first loss of the playoffs this season. Anyone who has been to this arena knows exactly what I mean. The corners are nearly square, there is no glass on the sideboards only at each end and the penalty box is attached to the players bench so that after you serve a penalty you don't even have to go out onto the ice, just go through the handy doorway onto your bench. This was also an advantage to Belleville's coach as he could and did go into the penalty box quite often to discuss things with the referee. It was even an advantage to the Belleville fan that went from beside Belle- ville's bench where he was taunting our players all the way around the arena and into our penalty box where he was going to dis- play his manhood or stu- pidity as he was going to take on the team. He was quickly removed by Port Perry fans. for a city that is on the "AA" classifica- tion and has four arenas to play in you would expect something a little better than this. The game itself wasn't too bad of a game for the most part. The Islanders have been idle for a while since their last game and it definitely hurt them be- ing off. Belleville got on the board first with a pow- er play goal early in the game but the Islanders Adam Smith evened the score at one apiece with helpers going to Noah Dor- land and Matt Phillips. Belleville regained the lead only 30 seconds later again with a power play goal to make it now 2-1. Belleville extended their lead with their first even strength goal of the game to make it 3-1. The Isles kept on pressing and tinal- ly it paid off as Ryan Puck- rin fired one in from Scott Heffern and Adam Hunter to make it a 3-2 game at the end of one period of play. The second period was all Belleville as they popped in three more goals to stretch out their lead to 6-2. The teams ex- changed goals in the third period to make it a 7-3 fi- nal score. Picking up the goal for the Islanders was Gavin Baxter from Matt Phillips and Dave Kam- minga. Brian Bickmore was in net for the Island- ers in this game and he came up with a quality ef- fort making numerous big saves. It was the four pow- er play goals that Belle- ville got that were the teams undoing. The Islanders next game is at home to Belle- ville on Friday, Feb. 23 with a 9:15 p.m. start time. Get out and support vour hometown Islanders. Friday, Feb. 16, Pearce Auction was in Cobourg for their second of six playoff games. Port Perry came out flying. Keenan Geer rushed down the ice and scored with a hard wrist-shot at the 20 second mark. Cobourg came back with many chances of their own but Leo Taillon was hot in net and shut them down. Port Perry got an insurance marker in the third as Jeff Tomcheski got it back to the point. Derek Goreski let go a bullet that picked the top corner. The well played win brought our playoff record to one and one. Early next morning Pearce Auction was headed to the Bradford Tournament for a 7 a.m. game. Totten- ham was our first opponent and they came out strong against our willing but tired legs. Goalie Mark Carna- ghan was hot and made many goal saving stops in the early going and earned M.V.P. for his performance in this game. Tottenham eventually broke through and gained a three goal lead. Pearce Auction's only goal in this game came mid-way in the third when Ashley Lucas tipped in a shot by Tyson Savage. The other assist went to Cassidy Weber. Port Perry returned to Bradford Sunday for the re- maining two games. The 10 a.m. game was against Kitchener. Our gang was in their face from the get go takingit 4-0. Kyle Mullins scored first unassisted. Ty- son Savage was next from Kory Bauer. ~ Port Perry's third marker came from our game M.V.P. Ashley Lucas assisted by (Killer) Dan Hal- Keenan Geer. Mark and Leo earned their second shutout of the weekend. Pearce Auction"s final match was against Pene- tang. Port's passing game helped them earn their first goal as Kory Bauer scored, much to mom's de- light. Assists went to Michael Lycett and Ashley Lu- cas. Ashley picked the top corner to make it two zip on a nice pass up from Derek Goreski. Penetang scored to make it 2-1. Kyle Mullins flew down the wing and around the defense to score unassisted. Matthew Roth played well as he skated hard. Taylor Churchill and Shane Jeffrey were strong on defence and so too was "Jack-rabbit" Nelson Langmaid, who earned game M.V.P. for putting in his usual 100 per cent. Port Perry fimished second to the undefeated Totten- ham squad. ward. Derek Goreski rounded out the scoring from | night earlier at Scugog Arena, posting a 5-2 win. Which brings us to the "uh-oh" part. Port Perry, by virtue of its placing in the league standings, -enjoys the ex- tra home game advantage should this series go the distance. And unless the fortunes of the ModJacks take an acute turn for the positive with a steal in Lit- tle Britain, they just might need that extra con- test to advance to the fi- nal. That is, of course, if the Modacks are able to domi- nate on home ice. If not, the ice - borrowing an ex- cerpt from the curling dic-. tionary - will get really tricky. "It was the type of game I expected," noted Mo- Jacks coach Chic Carnegie followed the loss. "We had to work hard and 1 thought we did for the most part. I used to think we didn't shoot enough pucks at the goal, but to- Turnto Page 20 1994 BUICK ROADMASTER Garnet Red Matching Cloth Interior 32,200 miles VERY RARE DERE, B PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perry 985-8474 -
