(see story) Police present awards to three Scugog men By Damian Bessie What do Scugog resi- dents Murray McVety, Dale Rutherford and Dr. Kevin Smith have in com- mon? They have all been rec- ognized for acts of heroism in the face of danger. During a ceremony at the Durham Regional Council on Feb. 14, the three Port Perry area resi- dents were presented with bravery awards by Police Chief Trevor McCagherty and Regional Chairman Jim Witty. "These are all proud members of Durham Re- gion who deserve recogni- tion for putting them- selves in danger to save strangers," said Mr. Wit- ty. The heroic acts all in- volved pulling injured vic- tims from car accidents. On Oct. 22, 1994, Mr. McVety saw a car travel- ling at high speed on Mal- colm Road. As the car went over a hill, McVety heard a crash and went to investigate. He found the car had rolled over and caughton fire. Mr. McVety wasted no time in getting the semi-conscious driver out. As he dragged the driver to safety, the vehi- cle became totally en- gulfed in flames. Last August, Mr. Ruth-- erford witnessed a Ford Bronco driving erratically on Regional Road 21. The truck suddenly veered off the road into a ditch where it began to roll until it hita driveway and became air- borne. When it finally came to a rest next to a tree, the Bronco was on fire. In March 1995, Dr. Smith, of Port Perry, was driving down the Island Road when he saw a car upside down on the side of the road. When he stopped to give assistance to the driver, Dr. Smith found her trappedin the car. The doctor was forced to treat her injuries while she was in the car, and sent a police officer to the hospital to get an 1.V. and other medical supplies. The investigating offi- cer felt that if it were not for the quick thinking of the doctor, the driver would have died at the scene. Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie who was also at the ceremony noted the impor- tant role these people play in the community. "The police and the po- lice commission feel it is important to honor people who have done something for the community," said Sgt. Ryrie. "It 1s important to ap- preciate these people who do alittle extra to help oth- ers, even total strangers, during times of emergen- cy. These people put their lives on the line for some- one else," he said. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star With the opening of the new Stephen B. Roman Wing at Community Mem- orial Hospital close to a year behind them, hospital officials are now putting their energy into a new celebration. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the incorpo- ration of CMH and plans are underway to observe the occasion with a number of activities throughout the year. Over the next few months, the Port Perry Star will be featuring his- toric stories about the hos- pital, from its beginnings on John St. to its current location on Paxton St. It is very much a story of the participation and comm- ittment of the Township's residents. Most of the material for the articles comes from a book published last year, Stitches In Time, which was compiled by local his- torians Gwenyth Thompson and Kent Farndale. CMH was named in 1946 by a group of public spirit- ed citizens who were work- ing to establish a public hospital in the area, on the shores of Lake Scugog. "Community" meant Port Perry and the surrounding townships of Reach, Scugog and Cartwright. "Memorial" was to honor »--those who had served in World War II. Hence the name Community Memorial Hospital was born and aft- er 50 years this health institution continues to serve the needs of this ever growing community. One of the first events to take place during this year of remembrance and cele- bration will be a 50th Anniversary Tea to be held on Sunday, May 2 from 2-4 p.m. More information about this event will be made available over the next few weeks. The final event of the year will take place in October, with Gala Dinner and auction planned to round out the activities.
