"Consequently youth who are sexually active do not have access to accurate information regarding the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS," her letter said. Another member of the committee, Colleen Bell, a parent volunteer, is leaving her post for health reasons, but also stated her disap- pointment with the board's decjsion in her resignation. As a parent she said she appreciates the board's concern for their children and their attempt to encourage abstinence, but said she was disappointed at the board's decision to not proceed with the Reduce the Risk document. "I am a born-again Christian and would cer- tainly be my preference that all teenagers would abstain from sexual involvement outside mar- riage, but | reahze that despite the best instruction at home and in the school, that some won't," she wrote. "I felt that the Reduce the Risk document went a long way to perhaps save some of the lives of those who become sexually actie. People learn from different methods of instruction and while some of the games may cause embarrassment for some, it was my hope that the outcome would be long remembered by the young people and perhaps would come to mind when faced with the choice to be sexually active and result in them choosing to say no, or at least saying yes in a manner that would reduce their risk somewhat," her letter continued. According to Mrs. Drew, who voted in favor of the document, the board also received a letter from Rev. Jennifer Matthews, the clergy representative on FLEAC, stating that the clergy members she had spoken with support the document as well, with the exception of one piece of material. The board has written to the Department of Health asking it to reconsider its decision to resign.
