Born at Concession 12, Huron Township in Bruce County, Mary was the daughter of the late Thom- as and Sara Holmes. She was educated at Ripley, Ont. Mary was a switchboard operator in Detroit, Michi- gan for Bell Telephone for several years. She was also employed at a knit- ting factory in Kincardine and later was an RNA at a Windsor hospital for some years. Mary was a member of Lindsay and Little Britain Fellowship Baptist churches. Her kind and loving at- titude of desiring to bring joy to the lives of others by sharing herself will al- ways be remembered by those who knew her, espe- cially when visiting in her home. She paid special at- tention to children when they visited, providing them with refreshments. And games for them were never overlooked. Some will remember how Mary enjoyed picking fiddleheads in the spring and preparing them for lunch. And much to' the surprise of some of her family, she became a will- ing, proficient tractor driv- er for haying and harvest. Mary was a faithful fol- lower of our Lord Jesus Christ and a sincere prayer warrior, daily spending time reading the Word and in prayer. Through her last years of failing health she was un- able to play the piano and sing as she loved to do in former years. The funeral service was: held at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 6 from the Wagg Funeral Home, McDermott- Panabaker Chapel. Ozone depletion hazards examined in talk The fifth talk in the Scugog Green Team community and environmental health talk series being sponsored by Health Canada's Great Lakes Health Effects Pro- gram, is coming up on Thursday, March 7 when Trent University Professor Dr. Wayne Evans will discuss how to protect our health from the increasing levels of ultraviolet radiation now reaching us as a result of ozone depletion. The talk will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Scugog Centre (beside the arena) in Port Perry. Ad- mission is free and all interested people are invited to attend. Although the average person understands that the planet's protective layer of ozone has been seriously de- pleted by chemicals, less well understood is the fact that human, plant and wildlife health are sustaining serious health impacts as a result of the greater amounts of ultraviolet radiation to which everything and everyone on earth are now being exposed. It is not just skin cancer which is at issue here, but also serious effects on the human immune system. Dr. Evans, a professor of Environmental Sciences at Trent University since 1990, has been studying ultra- violet radiation and the ozone layer, and in fact was the first to make a measurement of ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere in 1989. He has addressed a number of diverse groups about climate change and the effects of ozone depletion, and is considered to be an expert on these subjects. His talk in Port Perry on March 7 promises to shed some light on how, as indi- viduals and health professionals, we can learn to pro- tect our health from this growing threat. More information about the Scugog Green Team talk series, and about the group itself, can be obtained by calling Green Team Coordinator Janet Banting at (905) 985-3225. | | --_-- '96 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable Sedan or Wagon Low Monthly Payment 299 24 Month Lease. $3,439 Downpayment.
