"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 1996 - 13 Authority's seeking landowners to take part in tree program Rural landowners should act now to get in on the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority's (LSRCA's) spring tree- planting programs. The deadline for order- ing seedlings or hardwood saplings and shrubs has been extended to allow more rural landowners to participate. Reforestation in rural areas, especially along streams and valley lands, helps prevent soil erosion and reduces the amount of sediment and phosphor- ous entering the water- courses. This, In turn, helps to improve the water quality of Lake Simcoe. Benefits also include: im- proved air quality, wildlife habitat, noise reduction, and recreation potential. In addition to the envi- ronmental benefits, tree planting on abandoned or marginal farmland can also result in long term ec- onomic benefits to the landowner. 'Investing in tree- planting can improve the productivity of adjacent farmland by reducing wind erosion with proper- ly designed windbreaks," said Graeme Davis, LSRCA Forester. "Addi- tional benefits may 1n- clude energy savings from reduced heating costs, in- creased property values, and the production of high value timber." "The participation of ru- ral landowners has made our reforestation program successful and we want to continue to work with them in this important ef- fort," Mr. Davis said. Interested landowners with a minimum five acre lot (two hectares) should contact the Conservation Authority at 1-800-465- 0437 for more information NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC In the event of a strike by OPSEU, many Ontario gbvernment services will be available, although operating on a reduced basis; others will be unavailable.
