After a lop- sided loss to Belleville in the first game of the series the Islanders came back to give Belleville all that they could handle largely due to the goaltending duo of Doug Short and Brian Bickmore who were both outstanding in the teams last two games of the sea- son. Doug Short got the start for the Islanders in the second game and although he faced a lot of rubber he held his team in giving them the chance to even the series up. This was not to be however as with the score at 3-2 for Belleville and time running out on the Islanders they pulled their goalie to go for the equalizer but it didn't pay off as Belleville found the empty net to make it a 4-2 final. Scoring for the Is- landers were Aaron Levy and Matt Phillips with help from Chris Drury, Ashley Van Schelven and Mike Morden. though the Islanders lost this game it seemed to in- spire them a bit as they re- alized that just' maybe they could beat this Belle- ville team. The next night it was back to the Cowpalace in Belleville where the Is- landers were faced with a do or die situation. The ex- citement was in the air, the peanuts were flowing in the stands and the Is- landers were ready. Belle- Even ville got on the board first in the opening frame and it remained this way largely due to the fine goaltending of Brian Bick- more until late in the third period. The Islanders were growing in confi- dence and really starting to put a lot of pressure on Belleville when that old Cowpalace mystique took over. First the Belleville goalie fired the puck over the glass. A penalty right? Not in Belleville. Cowpa- lace rule. Next an Islander player, who served a penalty, was giv- en another one because when he came out of the penalty box, that has no door on it, he swung him- self into the players box without touching the ice first. Cowpalace rule. This really got the Isles riled up and on the ensuing penal- ty kill it would be Tyler Wooten, who was called up from the bantams, who would make a great solo effort tucking the puck into the Belleville net on a nice wrap around. With the score tied Belleville went to work on their pow- 'erplay and it paid off as they retook the lead with only a couple of minutes left. The Islanders tried to get the equalizer as they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but just couldn't manage to put the puck into the Belleville net. This series was fast- paced and hard hitting with a lot of scrumming and extra pushing and po- sitioning after the whistle and when the final horn blew closing out the Is- OFF 4 JD HD FISHING AND ARCHERY SPECIAL END OF SEASON SALE e Swedish Pimples 0% e Deadly Dicks e Mr. Champs Other Assorted Ice Fishing Lures 15% Discount on Power Augers 24 Water Street, Port Perry ()0 / 0 Off Winter Mitts & Clothing Closing for Holidays March 17 - April 2 Marj & Chuck (905) 985-0737 had just fanders season both teams dropped the gloves. Juveniles up by a game in playoff series Port Perry Juveniles are up three games to two over Cobourg in their OMHA semi final series. Their third win come Sunday night in Cobourg when Port outscored Cobourg 5- 2 Cobourg scored the only goal of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Cobourg opened the scoring early in the first period: Joe Broadsworth tied it up with a shot from the blue line while Port had a power play. Ian Shrigley gained an assist. Port went ahead when Jeff Card fired the puck past the goalie, set up by Ian Shrigley. Jeremy Norton put the game winner in when he put the puck in the top right corner. A great set up by Chad Garvock and Greg Thompson. Matt Hobbs gave the team one insurance marker. A hard-working Greg Thompson assisted on the goal. With 1:07 left in the game and Cobourg's goalie out of the net, Jeff Card - won the draw in Port's end and scored on a long shot to send Port home with a 5-2 win and a lead in the series. Join the Juveniles Wednesday in Port Perry at 8:30 p.m. when they will attempt to wrap up the series!
