"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 1996 -3 Council seeks traffic solutions for development Township planner calls for West Shore Developments seniors' home to proceed By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star In an effort to ease traffic congestion, Scugog Township council will be restricting left hand turns from Simcoe onto Perry Street when the new West Shore Community Retirement Development opens. Township planner James Dyment met with the developers recently to review the progress of the project, and the Perry Street entrance was just one of the items on the agenda. A number of items, including the high water mark of Lake Scugog were addressed at the meeting. Due to the water level mark, portions of the lands below the mark may have to be filled. The outcome of the meeting has the site plan process con- tinuing in two phases, with the main building and norther- ly portions of the land devel- oped as the initial phase. Mr. Dyment said the devel- opers are eager to get going on the main building of the project, adding there are no apparent reasons for it not to proceed. He said any frustrations now are between the developers and engineers, not township council. Called for one-way The planning committee told Mr. Dyment it is their prefer- ence that Perry Street become a one-way street at the inter- section of Simcoe Street. The committee believes that the high speed turns in this area will cease if traffic is diverted, allowing left hand turns onto Paxton and North Streets. Regional Councillor Marilyn Pearce also noted that the region 1s looking at Simcoe St. and the possibility of imple- mented a storage lane to ease traffic problems on Simcoe Street. West Shore Development is slated to consist of a 65-room full service retirement home, and 35 "cluster" homes. This is the second time the developers have tried to locate a development targeted to the mature adult and senior in Port Perry. A development on Casimir Street fell through in 1994. The West Shore retirement centre will provide seniors with accommodation &nd care in a setting that overlooks Lake Scugog. The facility is planned to provide a full array of ser- vices including daily meals, full housekeeping and laundry services, and a variety of activ- ity programs, as well as per- sonal care when required. The three-storey building would feature a two-storey din- ing room, fireplaces, library, lounge, hair salon and full activity rooms. A ribbon-cutting was held Friday morning at the Scugog St. office of PPHS' Youth Internship Program. The pilot pro- ject, funded by the federal government, got under way in late January, and will.continue until the end of this school semester. Cindy Cole, a youth counselor at PPHS, said the program has attracted 20 students, in their late teens and early 20's. Over the next couple of months, they will be involved in classroom work that includes acquainting them with computers and job skills, as well as on- site job shadowing and placements. Already students have undertaken two one-day job-shadowing outings, and another is planned. Job placements at local businesses will begin at the end of April. Already the shadowing placements have proven successful for a couple of students, said Ms Cole. Some students have been offered spots for their end of the year placements, and two others have land- ed part-time work. The aim of the program is to help students who have either left school early, or have found they have difficulty obtaining full-time employment after completing high school. They'll be taking entrepreneurial studies, business English and career readiness training, and have completed per- sonal profiles and research to point them in appropriate career direc- tions. Day of Prayer at Christian Centre On Friday, March 1, the annual World Day of Prayer service will be held at Victory Christian Centre, 593 Alma Street, Port Perry at 1:30 p.m. Using the theme, "God Calls Us to Respond", Chris- tian women of Haiti have prepared the World Day of Prayer service for March 1. Haiti, the world's first Black independent republic, has in this century suffered from military occupancy, in- ternal political repression, natural disasters and wide- spread poverty. Nevertheless, the return of democrati- cally-elected President Jean Bertrand Aristide in 1994 was cause for hope among the people. World Day of Prayer is a global, ecumenical move- ment of "informed prayer and prayerful action." On the first Friday of March each year, people in over 170 coun- tries participate in a common service in their own locali- ty. Services are translated into hundreds of languages and dialects.
