"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 1996 -5 Bon Voyage! Community Nursing Home residents set out on 'dream trip' By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Dreams do come true. Just ask the residents at Port Perry's community Nursing Homme, who jet away this weekend for their dream vacation in the sunny Caribbean. The trip is the culmination of three years of plan- ning and fundraising, during which $25,000 was raised to send a party of 24, including 15 seniors ranging in age from their 60's to 96, for a much- needed break from winter, said activity director Kim Mitchell. This is actually Dream Trip 2, she said. The first trip occurred in 1992, when a group of residents raised the funds they needed to go to Florida. "The residents came up with the idea," said Ms Mitchell. "They were sitting around one day, talking about past trips to Florida, and thinking they would never go there again. It went from dreaming to people saying, why not? "So we did it, and it was great." The next dream vacation is a much more ambitious affair. The seniors will fly from Toronto Sunday (March 3) for Miami, where they'll board the cruise ship Sensation, which is fully outfitted for their mobility needs. They'll spend the next several days cruising the Caribbean, with stops in St. Croix, San Juan, and St. Thomas, before returning home March 10. Many fundraising efforts have helped make the trip a reality, said Ms Mitchell, who extended a warm thanks to the people in the community who responded so well. "The community support here is fantastic," she said.
