8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" I _ETTERS A different view on the Golden report To the Editor: I wish to present a dif- ferent slant on the Golden Report on the Greater To- ronto Area than the one that has so far been widely quoted. Anne Golden and her committee presented a re- port that in their opinion would work in the best in- terest of the entire G.T A. Scugog Township and Durham Region need a vi- able Toronto much more than Toronto needs Scu- gog or Durham. A declining Toronto will result in fewer jobs for commuters in the outlying municipalities. Our world renouned cultural and sports organizations will only be sustained by a healthy Toronto from which these organizations draw the majority of their financial and attendance support. It should be noted that the financial costs being stated to this municipality are an estimate only, and calculated by people with self-serving interests as their jobs may possibly be- come redundant. I would therefore suggest that a worst possible scenario 1s being presented to us tax- payers. The Golden Report rec- ommends the amalgama- tion of five regions with their elected councils and non-elected bureauacies, 32 municipalities, again with their elected councils and non elected bureau- cracies for an area that 1s being overtaxed by a mul- titude of duplicity by all these governments. I see nothing wrong with the Greater Toronto Area being governed by a single body any more than our province and our coun- try being governed by a single body. It is time that taxpayers realize that we are being propogandized by the "what's if} it for me" syndrome of our locally elected officials. What we must conclude is: are our local politicians working to protect their own fiefdoms, or are they working for the benefit of the general public? To the Editor: Why is this government spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell us the obvious: that we are still using a two-dollar form of currency? What does it matterifitis a bill or a coin? Do we have a choice? And who cares anyway? One may as well argue that tomorrow will be another day, such is the silly logic we have grown to expect from our politicians. Does some government flunky stay up nights thinking of more stupid ways to spend our depleting source of money? It sure feels like it. Ouch! My bank account just shivered again! Oh,I have a greatidea (and I don't work for the gov- ernment). Why don't we get rid of our worthless pen- ny? Then we could change the old adage to "A nickel for your thoughts!" The Tobacco Control Act 1994 outlaws smoking by anyone on school property in the province of Ontario. There is no smoking al- lowed on the property of Port Perry High School. The resolution from town council does not change that fact.
