10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 5, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" AES office prepares to close doors From Page 1 last week to the Scugog Memorial Library. Other than that, "there are no provisions for local service at all." The AES office didn't go down without a fight. Immediately after announcements were made in last April's budy get of the impending clo- sure -- and a 35 per cent funding cut for 1995 -- Mr. Coy was appealing to federal officials, including Durham MP Alex Shepherd. TS a" -- ao ns fu uu su I¥)Carman's (RJM Photographics) foto source Mr. Shepherd, howev- er, agreed with the feds' move, describing the AES office as a duplication of services offered by Employment and Immigration in Oshawa. "Providing services more efficiently to help meet federal budget tar- gets has made it neces- sary to change the way services are delivered to agricultural employers," he said at the time. Other appeals were launched, including some by larger agricultural organizations on behalf of AES offices, but all failed. Mr. Coy says now that the offices weren't given a chance to submit plans for further cost restraints. "We operated with 35 per cent less funds this year, and we could have saved more if we had any input in it at all." He also slammed the local MP for not stepping in on behalf of a service he says is used annually by hundreds of job seek- ers. Young offender suspect in five bank robberies By Mary Sanchez Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police have charged a 17- year-old Whitby youth in connection with a two- week bank robbing spree. The suspect is believed to be responsible for five robberies in the region between Feb. 16 and 29, police said in a news release last week. Last Wednesday (Feb. 29) at about 10:50 am, a man entered the Bank of Nova Scotia in Pickering and presented a note demanding cash, police said. "It's most disappoint- ing that he gave no sup- port to the area's unem- ployed, or the farmers, for that matter." Mr. Coy, 60, is out of a job when the office closes. He was given a small amount, and fled the scene in a vehicle. Both a description of the vehicle and the suspect was broadcast to all Durham Regional Police offi- cers. Just after 11:15 the suspect vehicle was pulled over, and the 17-year-old youth fitting the description was taken into custody. A 17-year-old Whitby resident has now been charged with five counts of robbery involving one bank in Oshawa, two in Ajax, and two in Pickering.
