"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 5, 1996 - 11 > PORT PERRY STAR < URAL Roors I am beginning this column with information received too late for last week's publica- tion. February in Ashburn finds the Scouting movement alive and well. Four of the Venturers went to a cross- country ski jamboree, hosted by King City, Feb. 9, 10 and 11. Even though there wasn't enough snow to ski, they ran the 2.5 and 7.5 km. races instead, and played lots of snow games, ice skated, ate turkey dinner, danced, - laughed and snored some. The Beavers enjoyed an outing to the Whitby Fire Station and the Cubs all went skating on Rick and Judy Denike's pond. Scouts plus a few Venturers went winter camping on the -17C weekend and had a great time. Everyone celebrated Lord Baden Powell's birthday at the Parent/Youth Banquet, Wednesday evening, Feb. 21 at Burns Church. Entertainment was camp style storytelling, with low lights and sound effects, recounting the exciting encounter with "Bruce, the moose" last September in Algonquin Park. Finally, they closed off with a church parade service Sunday, Feb. 25 at Burns Church. Venturers also took basic canoeing at Iroquois that evening with 8th Whitby. Thanks Scouting for good community fun and friend- ships. We were pleased to wel- come the Rev. Karen Hincke to Burns pulpit last Sunday morning in the absence of our own minister. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to sis- ters Grace Hopkins and Jean Johnston and their. families.
