"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 5, 1996 - 17 SPORTS Little Rocks wind up season By Clive Powell Lights! Camera! Action! - Port Perry Little Rocks "went to the movies" on Sunday, March 3 as the wrap bonspiel took place at the Port Perry Curling Club. A total of 12 teams played off for the annual CIBC 'trophy. Winners of this year's event was the team of - Skip Stuart Cochrane, Vice Adam Johansen and Lead Elgen Ward. Runners up were Skip Jeffrey Slute, Vice Kelly Coates, and Lead Kimberley Wil- son. The Little Rocks are young curlers aged 6 to 12. Since it was first introduced to the Port Perry Curling Club three years ago interest has grown tremendous- ly. This past Sunday, 38 young people took to the ice for the wrap-up bonspiel. The level of enthusiasm has grown steadily over the season, which began in Octo- ber. So has the level of play. Many of our Little Rocks were curling for the first time. Every Sunday afternoon, an enthusiastic group of young people came out for an afternoon of curling. Many of the parents donated their time and expertise to provide instruction and on-ice supervision. The Port Perry Curling Club donated the ice time and the use of the facilities. Many of our own Curl Canada in- structors were on hand to provide instructional tech- niques and strategy. Our Little Rockers represented Port Perry at sever- al out-of-club bonspiels over the season in Whitby and Scarborough. The experience gained in these events helps to build confidence and also exposes the Port Perry Curling Club on the Little Rock scene in Ontario. Curling will become an official Olympic sport in 1998. The Port Perry Curling Club has recognized the need for the Little Rock program and is committed to carry this enthusiasm forward to re-establish a Jun- ior Program at the club. I would like to express my sincere thanks and ap- preciation to all the parent volunteers who came out every Sunday to support the program. A big thank you, also, is due to our sponsors, CIBC, Port Perry IGA, Nuts About Chocolate, Square Boy Pizza, Many Colors, Kids N' Computers and CineMax for their 'generous support. : We are looking forward to an even bigger and bet- ter 1996-1997 season.
