Ms. Porter said if a group could be organized, she could make it into a fund-raising project for the lodge. Mr. Morden organized for 32 people to take a one-week cruise from Miami to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Ochos Rios and back to Miami. And true to her word, Odd Fellows donate funds for eye research and Kids with leukemia Donald Beach, Grand Noble; Ronald Wannamaker, Deputy Grand Master of Ont., and Douglas Morden, Dist. 41, Grand Master with $3,400 cheque from Intra Travel. Ms. Porter delivered a cheque for $3,400 from Intra and herself to Beethoven Lodge. These funds enabled the lodge to finance its special non-profit activities planned for next year and make the two special $1,000 donations. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is an international fraternal and charit- able organization active in Durham Region. Durham MP is named to Indu Durham MP Alex Shepherd, has been appointed to the nine-member Federal In- dustry Committee and associate on the Fi- nance Committee. Mr. Shepherd said small and medium- sized businesses hold the key to future op- portunities for jobs and prosperity. "Representing the people of Durham as a member of the Industry Committee will allow me to focus on how average Canadi- ans can benefit from business advance- stry committee ment," the MP said. The committee is currently reviewing the lending practices of financial institu- tions to small an medium-sized business- es. The members are also working on amendments to the Bankruptcy and Sol- vency Act, Company Creditors Arrange- ment Act and the Income Tax Act. Sale ends March 31, 1996 Roberts and Zappa still placing in competitions By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Ian Roberts and his horse Zappa, from Port Perry, placed third at a re- centeventin Florida. The duo, competing in the open intermediate class, finished third in the international event that saw 350 entries take part. This third place victory comes on the heels of a first place finish at a three-day international event in Queretaro, Mexi- coin December. Mr. Roberts, along with his wife Kelly Plitz, a member of the 1984 Cana- dian Olympic evening team, co-own the local Dreamcrest Stables with Kelly's parents Doug and Carol Plhitz. . This recent competition is just one in a long line of competitions they will be competing in over the next few months as they pre- pare for the Olympic trials. The local competitors will return home on March 19 after a stop in North Carolina. On April 8 they will be on the road again to compete at the Rolex event in Kentucky, among other stops. The Kentucky Rolex event is a three-star event they must complete to earn a spot on the Canadian team. Mr. Roberts and Zappa, a 10-year-old bay thor- oughbred gelding, are can- didates for a berth on the Canadian eventing team which will compete at the 1996 games in Atlanta. Recently Mr. Roberts was also nominated for the Ministry of Citizen- ship 'and Culture sports awards as Male Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year.
