8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 5, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" I _ETTERS 'Where's protection for us?' OPSEU intimidation affects workers To the Editor: I'am an (unwilling) member of AMAPCEO - I don't even know what the initials stand for. AMAPCEO is the association that Bob Rae helped create in order to orga- nize unorganized labor in the Ontario public service. Unlike the OPSEU members, we have never had a col- lective agreement, and have no right to strike. We have no seniority rights, bumping rights, etc. We have received direction from management last week that it was unlawful for OPSEU members to intim- idate or threaten us. We expected that we wouldn't en- counter great opposition coming to work. Yesterday, Tuesday, the picketers were out by the road, and we had no difficulty getting to work. Many of my OPSEU colleagues also chose to go to work. As short service or contract staff, they feel they have everything to lose and nothing to gain, no matter what agreement is reached. I had to work at an alternative work site yesterday af- ternoon (doing my regular duties), and was not aware of the attack that my colleagues came under when they left yesterday. This morning, Wednesday, I was intimidated by men yelling, blowing whistles and blocking my way. I am a 5'2" female, and could not put up enough resistance to There ae many auctions offered in Scugog Township and surrounding areas, take the time to visit these. I went back to my car and called the list of numbers of seven manag- ers, and the reception desk. Not one call was answered by alive body. My manager will record my absence as absence with- out leave, and I will not receive pay for days absent. On my return home, I called an OPSEU colleague. Af- ter the previous evening's experience, she had chosen not to go to work out of fear. This strike is being run by militants, and does not re- flect the feelings of many staff, both AMAPCEO and .OPSEU. It is disgusting that a few militants, including prison guards, and so-called supporters from other un- jons such as the UAW, can threaten and intimidate per- haps the majority of public servants. Where is the protection for us? When are we going to stop the few from controlling the many? Why doesn't Mike Harris hire security guards to ensure that AMAP- CEO members, and those OPSEU members who choose not to strike, can access the workplace free of intimida- tion? The fact remains, however, that no matter how con- cerned we may become for our teens, we are still un- able to make their choices for them. We are faced with the reality that approximately half our students in high school have chosen to be- come sexually active. Parents, health workers and educators have a responsibility to respond to the needs of these students and provide them with accu- rate information and assertiveness skills that will re- duce the risk of their contracting a sexually transmit- ted disease or causing an unplanned pregnancy. Despite the staggering amount of resources our so- ciety spends in prevention and cessation programs for high-risk activities such as smoking, drinking and drug abuse, many teens still choose to experiment. This is a reality. Statistics show that no one group of teens is im- mune; there is very little, if any, difference in preg- nancy or STD rates among "good or bad" kids, teens of one or two parents, rich or poor, religious or non- religious, good students or weak students. The Health Department has resigned from The Durham Board of Education's Family Life Education Advisory Committee because it is committed to sup- porting all teenagers, those who have chosen to ab- stain, those who have chosen to be sexually active and those who may choose to become sexually active in the near future. Their mandate is in direct opposition to the slim majority of trustees representing The Durham Public Board of Education, who, in voting down Reduce the Risk, seem to have made a commitment to support only those students who are presently abstaining. This narrow view is fundamentally wrong.
