"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 12, 1996 -9 Local singers successful at Ontario Vocal Festival Young people in Scugog have been singing -- and having their praises sung. Three vocal groups from the area were In receipt of accolades after appear- ing in the Ontario vocal Festival at the beginning of March, and have been invit- ed to perform at the Canada-wide Music Fest in Toronto, May 20 to 25. One local quartet, Time Square, was awarded a Gold Standard prize at the provincial event, and invited to the national competition. Consisting of Port Perry High School students Joel van Veghel and Alida Wesselo, as well as Luke Yourkevich and Whitney Barris of Uxbridge, the a cappela group captured the honor after being formed just last May. GOHAWA FOR MEREHUMANS Jazzmerize and the PPHS concert choir will both perform at the national event in May, instructor Charles White said last week. It was the latest in a long history of recognition for the PPHS vocal program, but one that was especially pleasing, said Mr. White. "There's just some really fine groups who compete at this festival," he said. He said that he would likely opt again for no adjudication at Music Fest, choos- ing rather to let his groups simply do their thing, and have a good time. "I think we'll not worry about the (adjudication); we'll go and sing," said Mr. White. He fecls allowing the kids to perform simply for the love of music is a valuable exercise as well. "They're thinking more about what a good performance is than what they'll get for it," said Mr. White. for Two Pass Valid until April 30, 1996. We understand the need for budget cuts in order to reduce the deficit. However, we believe the burden of the sacrifices required must be shared equitably across the whole society not exacted unfairly from one or two : segments. The idea that TAX eliminating ong of khogs civil servants along wit the negotiated bens of RETURNS those who will be left working is grossly unfair. PR y ARED Compare this to what is required of the wealthy: They are being asked to "absorb" a tax cut as their share! The total of this cut will exceed by far what is to be taken off the deficit. In other words, that is really what the rest of us are being asked to pay for; hardly equitable.
