"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 12, 1996 -21 HAUGENS WINS MATCHUP It was an early morning matchup Saturday, March 2 at the arena. Haugen's had little problem with Re/Max on this one, winning 5-1. Haugen's had it all, strong goaltending from Michael Jehu and a strong scoring touch from Mitch Sauder, leading the way with four goals. Re/Max worked hard but really couldn't get the break needed to match Haugen's on this given day. Sauder's first two goals of the game came in the first period with assists from Corey Hellingman (with two) and Owen Penstone getting the other. Chris Boomhour scored the only goal in the second period with assists going to David DeKoning and Scott Martin. Mitch Sauder continued the scoring in the third with two more goals with the two assists going to James Donaldson. Re/Max's lone goal came off the stick of David Stewart with assists going to Darren Tapper and Josh McCabe. One other highlight of the game was Trevor Algar, tending goal for Re/Max stopping a penalty shot which was awarded to Haugen's in the second period. Good game kids, thanks to our sponsors, Re/Max and Haugen's. TOURNAMENT TIME FOR IGA The IGA Bantam Crew headed north to Gravenhurst this past Friday for our weekend tournament. They were excited and ready to play hockey. We suited up for the first game Friday night at 9 p.m. against Nobleton. The first period was scoreless as both teams came out flying. Jeremy Pare was making some good plays during this period and Lawrence Cook was in net entertaining us with some interesting saves. During a scramble in front of the net, Jeremy scored our first goal at 7:44. Nick Ostafichuk and Reid McTaggart were letting go some wicked shots from the blue line, but their goalie was stopping them. Into the third and we were dominating the game. Chad Lance and Pete McKitterick were delivering some good checks and we held them off until 3:01 when they got in on us and scored to tie the game 1-1. We went into sudden death overtime but couldn't get the puck out of our end. Nobleton scored after one minute, and we headed back to our hotel to party in Mark's room. Game two was Saturday at 6 p.m. A team from Kitchener were our opponents and Chris Thompson was back from Columbia to relieve Lawrence Cook between the pipes. We were controlling the puck in the first period and at 9:25 Jeremy carried the puck in and Ken Ellis popped it in the net. They came back and scored on us to tie the game 1-1 with seven seconds left in the period. We took the lead at 9:31 of the second when Steve Martyn passed to Joel VanCamp and he put the puck over their goalie. Mark Delaney and Murphy Irvine on defence were all over the other team checking them. Kitchener picked up two quick goals less than a minute apart to go up 3-2 at the end of the second. Into the third and the IGA boys were showing the effects of the night before. We were getting tired and they scored one goal on us then another into the empty net in the last moments of the period to win 5-2. Good effort this game by Murphy Irvine and Kam Cooper. Helping Coach VanCamp on the bench for the tournament were Greg Sanders, Greg Ostafichuk, Dave Thompson and Jon Sanders. A great time was had by all x and thanks to Bill for making arrangements for the team to go. NOVICE HOUSE LEAGUE A 100 per cent effort on the ice from every player was well appreciated from the fans and coaches. End to end action was the norm for this between Haugen's and Van Camp. Scott Martin and Matt Whalen for Haugen's played like pros on defence, the whole game. Pat Dunn played a fantastic game for Van Camp in net. He had a shut out going into the last two minutes of the third, when Glen Powell broke the perfect game at 1:06 remaining. The first goal of the game was scored with 7.6 seconds remaining in the second period. Brett Whyte of Van Camp saw teammate Mike Waller, perched at the corner of Mike Jehu's net. A pin point pass from Whyte to Waller, and Waller one timed it into the open net. Brooks Taylor netted Van Camps second goal unassisted on a fine rush. Mike Jehu, goalie for Haugen's also played an outstanding game making save after save. Potvin would have been proud of Mike's toe saves. David Briley and Owen Penstone made a couple of end to end rushes, for Haugen's as did James Donaldson, on a scramble in front of Pat Dunn. James laying flat on the ice, managed to get a shot on Dunn the hit the post and squirted out the other side of the net. Brooks Taylor, as always, played a strong game, as did Rob Waller. The final score was 2-1 for VanCamp. Great game kids. Thanks to our sponsors Haugen's and Van Camp. Bruins, Swamp win first games This past Sunday, the Port Perry Broomball As- sociation started their first round of playoffs with the top two teams emerg- ing victorious in their opening games. Brooklin's Bruins romped over the Black- stock Brewers in the first match by a 5-1 total. Doing most of the damage for the Bruins was Ron Attwood as he amassed a pair of goals and a single assist. He was followed closely by brother Nick who was credited with a single goal and a pair of assists. The Bruins got four of their markers in the first period with Luc Collard and Shawn Mitchell being awarded the remaining two. Also adding assists to the total were Mitchell with a single as well as singles to Roger Rouselle, Rob Mason, and Rob Ki- vell. Before all was said and done the Brewers had re- plied with their lone tally after the Bruins had cruised to a comfortable five goal lead, with it com- ing off the broom of Al Bou- meester from Ron Wagg and Ron Short. In game two of the day the Homelife Swampers eked out a close 1-0 win over Trader Sam's. This only goal came at the opening face-off of the sec- ond period with Mike Mole getting credit and Mike Butt being awarded the assist. Keith Tremblay be- tween the pipes for the Swampers was awarded the shutout. Before these two games kicked off, the Framer's Gallery and the Stouffville Scorpions played an exhi- bition affair with the Scor- pions blanking the Gallery by a 4-0 tally. Dave Price picked up a goal and an as- sist to lead the scoring for Stouffville. He was fol- lowed with a pair of goals by Scott Suggitt, and a sin- gle to Paul McGinty. Leo Pettipas, Jeff Poulton, and Wade Davis each picked up a single assist. Rob Rutschmann recorded the shutout for the Scorpions. 'thanks to Matt Charron's quick stick. Jake Jones as- Compton lose by one This was our first ever matchup with Sunderland and what an exciting game. It's too bad that there has to be a winner and a loser in a game like this. During the first period, Port went on the board sisted on the play. This was Jake's game. At the 4:19 mark of the sec- ond, Jake faked the goalie and slipped one in. Tyler Cunningham and Matt Charron assisted. Sunder- land banged in two quick goals. Tie game heading into the third. Sunderland got the go-ahead marker. With only 24 seconds left , we took a chance and put out another at- tacker. Jake did it again. Matt Charron and Tyler Cunningham assisted again. These guys were in the right place at the right time for the whole game. The team was ecstatic however, with only 15 sec- onds left, Sunderland put the winner in our net. Final score 4-3. Our second matchup on Sunday night got a little rough (Just like the weather). There was plenty of time spent in the penalty box by both teams. Sunderland got off to a quick start grabbing two in the first and one in the second. In the beginning of the third, they got one more. At the 8:32 mark, Matt Charron ensured the Sunderland goalie wasn't awarded a shutout. The game report is hard to read, so it's hard to say who picked up the first assist. Was it Brett Simmonds (two) or Craig Kehoe (12?). An as- sist also went to Jake Jones. Final score 4-1.
