"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 19, 1996 -3 Petition gathers momentum 1,000 call for stiffer impaired sentences By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Residents of Scugog Township want to see tougher penalties imple- mented for impaired driv- ers. Thatis the message Viv- 1an O'Neill is receiving as more than 1,000 people have signed her petition urging stiffer penalties for those convicted in drink- ingand driving accidents. Mrs. O'Neill, of Black- stock, began the petition in February, after becom- Ing increasingly angered at the continuing inci- dents of impaired drivers causing injury and death to innocent victims of the highways. The need for a new ap- proach to this crime was driven home earlier this year with the passing of friends in alcohol-related accidents. She wants Scugog Township residents to tell provincial Attorney Gen- eral Charles Harnick that it is time to toughen the laws by sending those con- victed in fatal accidents to jail for longer sentences. . The petition has been circulating locally in many stores and organiza- tions and are still located in Joe's Pizzeria and Blackstock Country Con- veniece, for those wishing to add their names to the list. The petition has al- ready sparked some posi- tive response as some school peer groups are forming coalitions to bring the message of drinking and driving across to oth- ers. "People of Scugog want stiffer penalties. That is the response we have been getting," Mrs. O'Neill said. KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Vivian O'Neill, of Blackstock, holds a petition she started, urging stiffer penalties for those convicted of impaired driving. Mrs. O'Neill has collected more than 1,000 signatures so far and is hoping for more. Please see story for more details.
