= Good calf survival needed Area cow-calf producers will need to maximize their calf survival rate this winter in order to have more calves to mar- ket in the fall. A 100 per cent calf crop will help boost gross income at sale time with the predicted drop in calf prices. Many factors can impact on calf survival. Factors include hypo- thermia, starvation, post- calving infections such as scours, birth trauma, dys- tocia (calving problems) and cow nutrition prior to calving. Many of these fac- tors can be avoided by good management. Often weakness in calves can be traced back to poor cow nutrition. The period during which calf crop percentage 1s affected most by nutri- tion extends 30 days prior . to calving and for 70 days after calving. The cow's re- quirements for energy and protein increase by 20 per cent in the last third of pregnancy, as itis a period of rapid fetal growth. Re- quirements for all nutri- ents increase dramatical- ly following calving. Milk production requires large amounts of energy, pro- tein and calcium. It 1s a time for producers to bring out their best quality for- age and if it is not availa- ble, then feeding some grain with their forage may be necessary. The best way to reduce post-calving infections, such as scours, 1s to pre- vent calves from getting scours in the first place. Once again this comes back to sound manage- ment practices. Scours are a big problem when very young calves: (less than a week old) get sick. In only a few hours, these very young calves can lose so much body wa- ter that you won't be able to treat them fast enough to prevent them from go- ing into shock. If you have a scours problem on your farm, you will have to check very young calves of- AUTO ELECTRIC ) Marine * Industrial * Farm > Sales and Service < Starters Alternators Generators , Regulators Hwy. 36 Auto Plaza, R.R. #3 Lindsay (705) 878-3701 WITH US make it happen.
