It operates 24 hours each day, seven days a week. Ordinary AM or FM ra- dio cannot receive weath- er radio frequencies. Re- ception is reliable with good quality crystal- controlled receivers. For this area, Weather Radio is serviced by transmitters from Harwood or Toronto area. In adjacent areas, re- ception depends upon the location of the receiver and upon atmospheric conditions. As VHF radio waves travel in straight lines, re- ception behind hills and other obstacles may be weak. Non-crystal VHF-FM receivers, although cheap- er, may be affected by in- terference from neighbor- ing frequencies. However, they can provide satisfac- tory reception in areas rel- atively free from interfer- ence and close to the transmitter. An external antenna will improve reception in both types of receivers. To ensure good reception, equipment tests on loca- tion are recommended prior to purchase. Weather Radio Canada transmits a cycle of weath- er information tailored to interests and needs of lo- cal users. The program is repeated and updated at regular intervals. It may be interrupted at any time to broadcast weather warnings. The length of the pro- gram cycle varies some- what, averaging five to 10 minutes. The cycle may in- clude: weather watches and warnings; current public and marine fore- casts and .longer range trends plus special weath- er information for agricul- ture, recreation, industry, travel and transportation.
