"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Se ' PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 9, 1996 - 9 Early morning fire on Island destroys shed and contents By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Cam and Joan Aldred watched helplessly last Thursday morning as a large storage barn/ workshop his father built more than 55 years ago went up in flames. The workshed, located on Demara Rd., Scugog Island, was completely destroyed in the blaze. Mr. Aldred, whose hobby is woodworking, had been working in the shed for more than an hour when he decided to take a break and go to the house for his morning coffee. As he was leaving, he 2 il Fr Sgr sv ih. SS noticed a small fire under way in one corner of the workshop, not far from an airtight woodstove used to heat the building. Mr. Aldred ran to the house and asked his wife to call the fire department. ~ Grabbing a heavy coat, he ran back to the shed and tried unsuccessfully to smother the fire. Realizing his efforts were futile, he turned his attention to his prized possession, a 1965 Buick which was stored in the shed for the winter. After several attempts he was able to get the old classic car started, backing it out and away from Cam Aldred watched shed he used for woodworking go up in flames. spreading fire. A small propane tank stored in the shed exploded during the height of the fire, but fortunately no one was injured. Although the building was insured, Mr. Aldred is sure it will not come close to covering the replace ment cost of the many tools he had in the shed. Luckily, firefighters from Scugog Hall #1 and #2 were on the scene quickly and prevented the fire from spreading to the house or a nearby barn built in 1889 by Mr. Aldred's grandfather.
