The mission's objective i8 to provide a forum for Canadian and U.S. legis- . lators to share their views with United Nations staff on matters dealing with peacekeeping personnel and international rela- tions. "The Somalian Affair is increasing Canadians' concerns about our peace- keeping role and our pre- paredness for these func- tions," Shepherd said. He said he will be ask- ing, on behalf of Canadi- ans, if Canadian troops are properly trained for assignments and if the UN deploys them effec- tively and according to their abilities. In addition Shepherd said he will use the mis- sion to question Congres- sional leaders about trade imbalances in both the NAFTA and GATT agree- ments. Shepherd will be travel- ing under the auspices of Canadian Parliamentari- ans for Global Action. All travel, accommodation and meals will be paid for by New York based Parlia- mentarians for Global Ac- tion. Parliamentarians for Global Action is an inter- national network with 'WEEKEND STAR' over 1,3000 members drawn from 89 legislators. Their goal is to promote international peace, se- curity, democracy and de- velopment along with strengthening interna- tional treaties and law. Works Dept. promotes recycling The Works Department of Durham Region will con- tinue to make improvemets to its Solid Waste Manage- ment programs and promote the benefits of recyling. That is the message from the Commissioner of the Works Department in light of the 1995 waste manage- ment annual report. The report showed that 21,032 tonnes of recyclables were collected in the region during 1995. This repre- sented an increase of 200 tonnes from 1994. Of the material collected 11,771 tonnes of newspa- per, 3,457 tonnes of glass bottles and jars, 2,411 tonnes of cardboard and 2,213 tonnes of mixed metal and plas- tic containers were processed and trucked to market. The revenue for the products reached a total of just over $3 million. One of the major changes last year was the phasing out of the Igloo program which was replaced by new ru- ral, apartment buildings and multi-residential plans. The Region of Durham operates four waste manage- ment facilities, two of which are located in Scugog. While the Oshawa transfer station received an in- crease of six per cent and Brock an increase of three per cent in material coming to the stations, Cartwright saw an 11 per centincrease in itsgarbage. The Blackstock area transfer station received 2,591 tonnes of waste material in 1995, with 71 per cent be- ing garbage waste and the remainder recycled, com- posted or reused. On average 11 bulk containers were emptied each week from the site. The Reach Road facility in Port Perry received 3,633 tonnes of material, an increase of five per cent over 1994. The garbage waste was hauled to the Metro Landfill Site in Pickering and 34 per cent was reclyed, composted or reused.
