PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 9, 1996 - 3 Shelter 'bursting' Cats are being put down as pound struggles with crisis By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star They're bursting at the seams with strays at Scugog's animal shelter. "We desperately need homes for adult cats," Shirley Kohler, assistant animal control officer at the Scugog shelter on Reach St. said last week. "We're having to put them down because we have no room." Shirley said that while the number of strays finding their way to the pound is way up, there are fewer folks coming in "to adopt the homeless felines. As of last week there were 26 adult cats, plus 10 kittens at the overflowing pound. It got so bad at one point -- with all the cages full -- that the cats and their kittens were being placed wherever room could be found for them. There are usually between.15 and 18 cats at the pound. "We had a mom and her babies in the jkitchen for three days because there just wasn't room," said Shirley. : Meanwhile, the pound is averaging . just a couple of adoptions monthly of late. Usually, there are between 10 and 12 adoptions each month. One of the reasons for the population boom that's causing the problems is that the animals are wandering around with- out being fixed. "People just aren't having their ani- mals spayed and neutered," said Shirley. The overflow has resulted in some heart-rending decisions being made. While the people who run the pound try to avoid euthanizing the animals for as long as possible, the crowded conditions means they're having to be put down. "We put down a beautiful 10-year-old calico cat today," said Shirley on Wednesday. "It wasn't needed. There was nothing wrong with her." It's tougher to find homes for older cats as opposed to kittens, Shirley said. "It breaks my heart," she added. "I get attached to the animals. I really do." Shirley urged people who have pets they can no longer keep to bring them to the pound, as opposed to just abandoning them in the wilds of Scugog. "If you have a dog or a cat you can't keep bring it in, or at least give us a call," she said. "We're more than happy to try and help them out." You can reach the Scugog shelter by calling 985-8547. JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR Shirley Kohler of the Scugog Animal Control Centre in Port Perry cuddles one of the many cats that have been taken in by the pound recently. The shelter is desperately seeking homes for the more than 20 cats which are crowding the small building. Shirley attributes the population boom to cats that haven't been fixed. She said the air of con- cern among Epsom par- ents -- as well as those of kids attending schools at several other schools in Oshawa, and elsewhere in the region -- was whipped up by the media. "Some early media cov- erage led people to believe these schools would be We'd rather sell it than count it! YEAR-END SALE Carpet & Vinyl Roll Ends closed," she said. "...but all it is, is an information PRATT & LAMBERT PA NT report." Mrs. Drew said the pol- icy will be updated and brought back to trustees, and in the event Epsom P.S. is once more consid- ered by a committee look- ing into school closures, she has asked that some information be changed. for instance, information has Epsom listed as need- ing a new gym, at a cost of $1.5 million. that's far from realistic, said Mrs. Drew. In fact, any addi- tion for gym use would more likely be a portable. "Ifa $1.5 million gym went on the grounds at Epsom that would be against my wishes, and against the wishes of the people of Epsom."
