4- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 9, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Ten Durham superintendents in 'Century Club' But still has fewer earning $100,000 than neighboring York board By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Ten superintendents with the Durham Board of Education are among the so- called 'Century Club" of civil servants making more than $100,000 a year, statistics released by the board show. Also likely to be among those earning wages topping $100,000 will be Grant Yeo, the new director of education, who was hired last week. His 'salary has not been released, but former board director Pauline Laing, who has moved on to employment with the provincial ministry of educa- tion, pulled in an annual wage of $123,000, with $489 in reportable taxable benefits. The figures were released under the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, brought into power by the new Progressive Conservative government. The figures show that the Durham board's 10 superintendents earn salaries ranging from $101,158 to $$116,000. By comparison, the neigh- boring York Board of Education -- which has a student popula- tion comparable to the Durham board -- released a list of 18 superintendents who make more than $100,000 a year. That list showed salaries rang- ing from a low of $105,000 to a high of $130,000, for board director Bill Hogarth. Release of the figures has set tongues wagging across the province as, for the first time, the wages of high-place bureau- crats and other public sector workers were released whole- sale. There has been some debate on the merits of paying such high wages to people who are, essentially, public ser- vants. But Scugog public school board trustee Bobbie Drew said Durham ranks low among boards serving similar popula- tions. And she defended the wage pulled in by the directors of the local board, comparing the position to that of chief executive officer of a large, multi-million-dollar company. "It's a $336-million corpora- tion," she said. "It's a huge responsibility." Here is a list of those report- ed by the Durham board as earning more than $100,000, with reportable taxable bene- fits in parentheses: Q Brian Cain, superinten- dent of education: $107,295 ($454), Q Cornelius Daleman, area superintendent: $104,260 ($442); Q John Gardner, area super- intendent: $101,158 ($428); Q Michael Graham, plant superintendent: $104,260 ($442) 0 Pauline Laing, director (since departed): $123,017 ($489); 0 Turid Nisbett, area super- intendent: $104,260 ($442); 0 David Snodden, area superintendent: $104,260 ($442), 0 Barry Vail, area superin- tendent (includes payment in lieu of holidays upon retire- ment): $116,051 ($377); 0 Bruce Walker, community service superintendent: $106,286 ($449); a Douglas Wilson, opera- tions superintendent: $104,260 ($442); a Carol Yeo, area superin- tendent (includes holiday pay- ment upon retirement): $113,299 ($469).
