Is one material superior to the other? What are some of the benefits o mulches? Mulches can prevent weed growth and soil ero- sion. A thick mulch can prevent seed germination and weeding chores. Also, if the garden is on a slope, a properly applied mulch can reduce soil erosion. This prevents the loss of your best soil. One of the major bene- fits of mulches is the con- servation of soil moisture. Mulches help keep a more uniform supply of water available to your vegeta- bles. This can be quite important if you encounter a disease, such as blossom- end rot of tomato, which is favored by fluctuating soil moisture levels. Additionally, many dis- eases are soil-borne, that is, they survive the winter in the soil. Early blight of tomatoes is caused by a fungus that survives in the soil. The fungus is then splashed by rain onto the the early blight fungus from the soil to the leaves of the tomato plants, thus reducing the application of fungicides. . Mulches allow you to work in your garden sooner after heavy periods of rain. By applying mulches you can keep fruits such as beans, strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupes, etc. from laying on the soil where they're often invad- ed by soil fungi which infest and rot them. Mulches can be a good way to recycle organic mat- ter, and at the same time, improve your garden soil. Materials such as shredded bark, sawdust, grain straw, hay, pine needles and paper can be used as mulches and eventually incorporated into the soils. Some plastic mulches are now available in a bio- degradable form. They begin to deteriorate late in the season and can be tilled into the soil where degra- dation is complete. The proper use of mulch will help you have a more productive garden and at the same time, maintain a better environment. don't need to collect grass clippings. Short clip- pings returned to the lawn after seeding may mulch exposed soil. Seed of several lawn- grasses germinate quickly (i.e. tall fescue, 5 to 10 days). Within a few weeks, - you'll be able to evaluate the results of your lawn seeding method. xalong the sail or wing part of the blade, it should be replaced We, J clan ar i gS, Te Br rv ---------- ~ A Spreading Evergreens 60 cm (24") reg. 521.75 Now: $16.31 Blue Sargent, Mint Julep, San Jose, Above sale prices Blue Rug and Blue Chip unl May14th 1 gal. size reg. 38.75 Now: $6.12 Above sale prices until May 31st Cocoa Bean Mulch 20% OIE 2.5 cu.ft. bag reg. $7.95 NOW? $6.36 Above sale prices from April 15 to May 31 A blade with the tip higher than the center will cut poorly and requires excessive power.
