Afternoon Unit of the U.C.W. - Nine members and one guest met at the United Church for dessert luncheon. Jean Churchill opened the meeting with a poem "God 1s Real." Roll Call was answered by signs of spring we had observed. Audrey Wright chose "Joy" for her theme in worship. The scripture was Matthew 28-1 to 10 and the hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" was sung. Our quilt project was dis- played. (Four single bed quilts and three crib quilts). These are to be donated to Denise House. Jean Churchill introduced her friend Betty Lindblad who had been on a trip to Thailand. She left Toronto to Anchorage where the plane refueled and then on to Hong Kong. The trip was 22 days long with 14 of those on board a ship which called at Singapore, Kuala, Lumpar and Bali. Betty showed us batik fabric, pictures made from rice chips, earrings made from rubber and many pictures. A most interesting talk. Jean Churchill closed the meeting with benediction. -Dora Martyn, reporter A Thank You Concert will be presented by the Cartwright High School Concert band at the Cartwright Central Public School on Monday evening, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in appre- ciation of the generous support for their upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. There will be no admission for this pro- gram of approximately one hour featuring the selections the band will play at the Invitational Music Festival in Washington. Do plan to attend if possible. Another reminder of the bus that is going to the Craft Show in Toronto on Saturday, April "20. In last week's notice some- how that date was missed. Plans are well underway for the talent auction which will be held at the Blackstock Blackstock United Church on Friday evening, April 26. The event is a delightful mixture of enter- tainment and fundraising. Everyone is welcome. The Blackstock Women's Institute met on April 3 begin- ning with a pot luck dinner. President Pat Sleep welcomed the 13 members after which Grace was sung and a bountiful dinner served to all. After dinner much business was dealt with including read- ing letters from Mrs. McArthur in the Peterborough Nursing Home and a thank you from the R. VanCamp family for our gift to Park House in Margaret's memory. Joan Graham is working on a tree planting project in our area again this year. If anyone is interested in purchasing some trees call Joan Graham now. The W.I. gave Joan a dona- tion to help with this worth- while project. Dora Martyn gave her Disrict Director's report out- lining some of the District events. The Blackstock W.I. will be 90 years old next year and plans are being made to celebrate. The new officers for 1996-97 were installed by Muriel Hoskin as follows: Past-presi- dent - Pat Sleep, President - May Shortridge, First Vice - Betty Hockley, Secretary - Carol Thornton, Treasurer - Pat Sleep, District Director - Dora Martyn, P.R.O. - Lois Luke, Sunshine - Helen Bradburn, Curator - Kathleen Watts. Dora Martyn is heading a committee to have an essay writing contest for the fair using the title - How to Keep Quebec in Canada. Prizes to be given for four grades - Grades 5,6, 7 and 8. Meeting closed with O'Canada. Lois Luke, PR.O. The meeting of the Morning Unit of the U.C.W. was held at the home of Dorothy Venning on Tuesday, April 9 with 18 members and one child present. After enjoying goodies and a beverage, Margaret Mountjoy opened the meeting with a verse, "That Something Special" as a special tribute to our hostess Dorothy Venning who will celebrate her 85th birthday on April 10. The Unit presented Dorothy with alovely hanging basket for her porch and lots of good wishes. Tie minutes of the March meeting were read and adopted and the treasurer's report received. Pat Sleep and Edith McLaughlin reported on the layette for the Port Perry Hospital Auxiliary Silent Auction on May 11. We were reminded of the "Friendly Visitor Luncheon" on April 23 and "Living Together in Canada" at Eastminister United Church in Belleville on Tuesday, April 30 from 2 to 9 p.m. The unit has been invited to help prepare for Kathleen and Dalton Dorrell's 50th Wedding Anniversary celebra- tion on Aug. 4 at the church. Edith McLaughlin prepared and presented a program on violence in our society particu- larly among our young people. Much discussion and interest was generated.
