J "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Public will view plans for Island casino this week By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Residents are invited to an open house on Scugog Island this week to pre- view plans for a gaming fa- cility. "The Great Blue Heron Entertainment Centre," slated to open in Septem- ber this year will be locat- ed on the lands of the Mis- sissaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. The public is invited to an open house at the First Nation Community Cen- tre this Friday from 1-4:30 p-m. and Saturday from 10a.m.-2 p.m. The open house will in- clude drawings for the proposed .45,000-square foot building, which is re- ported to be designed for 40 gaming tables and a bingo hall. The Mississaugas held a two-day trial gaming' weekend earlier this year at the Island Community Centre. The hall is to be man- aged by Casinos Austria, a company which operates and manges some 100 fa- cilities around the world. The idea for the gaming facility was first intro- duced by Chief Gary Ed- gar in a letter to the Port Perry Star in September, 1993. While some neighbors of the facility have been fighting it since the begin- ning, the province ap- proved the Mississaugas bid in 1994. The neighbors' concerns included environmental issues, and the disruption from traffic traveling to and from the facility. Chief Edgar has stated that the First Nation is very willing to work with the community to make its proposed gaming facility feasible. A consultant for the pro- ject, John Chalmers, told council in October of 1994 that the facility could create in the neighbor- hood of 200 to 250 jobs, 80 per cent of them for people living off the reserve. At that time he said the maximum capacity of the hall would be 1,200 peo- ple. The band could rent out the facility for fund- raising Monte Carlo nights, featuring roulette and card games, on week- ends, with a maximum of 280 gamblers for those events, Mr. Chalmers had said. at 1722 Scugog Street. each nightis 7 p.m. day.
