George Horning, a con- sultant for the region, was at the township meeting recently to explain the re- gion's plans for the road. The committee was pre- sented with two options to improve the situation and endorsed the one which would see restriking of the road to put the centre lane back in the middle of the road with one lane of traf- fic in each direction. The proposal would also see parking banned from both sides of the street, pedes- trian refuge and the im- plementation of a left hand turning lane at Pax- ton Street. The pedestrian refuge would make it safer when crossing the road. One ref- uge would be placed at Perry and Balsam Streets and a second at Kellett and Simcoe Street. It was also suggested that a side- walk be constructed from Kellett Street to Regional Road 8. The cost of the pedestri- an areas would be $5,000 each with the municipali- ty billing the region for its maintenance. The Region is also con- cerned with speeding on Highway 2 when entering Port Perry from the north. The speed limit will likely be lowered north of its cur- rent location. Although Road Super- intendent Ronn MacDon- ald told Mr. Horning that there are more vehicles turning at this intersec- tion than Queen and Sim- coe showing a need for traffic lights at this loca- tion, Mr. Horning said the sidestreets warrant the difference making traffic lights out of the question at this time. He noted that as devel- opment continues and traffic increases the area would be looked at again. Canterbury Commons, slated for the corner of this intersection, has already been taken into account at the time of the study. The committee en- dorsed the recommenda- tions but it has not been endorsed by council yet.
