(W)rites of Spring, being staged here May 5 by the League of Canadian Poets, will bring writers and the pub- lic together for an after- noon of reading and dis- cussion, says Owen Neill, the local poet who's orga- ~ nizing the event. He'll be among the poets headlining the Hawthorns, Hearts and Holograms program dur- ing the afternoon, sched- uled to occur between 11:30 and 4. Others include Joan Finnigan, Barry Dempster, and Linda Stitt. "It's a presentation of works by a variety of poets on spring themes, and all that entails," said Mr. Neill. More than a dozen other poets will be coming to Port for (W)rites of Spring to read, chat, and share ideas. Mr. Neill's hoping the people of Scugog -- closet poets and all -- will join in the celebration. "I think it will be a new experience for those who have never seen a concert of poets," he said. "And for those who are closet poets, this will be some- thing that will encourage them to come out of the closet. There are a lot of people who do this sort of thing, but there's no venue for them." Adding to the proceed- ings will be door prize draws and raffles for items that include hotel stays, dining certificates, and theatre tickets. The greatest beneficia- ry of the event will be poetry itself, said Mr. Neill. He's hoping people come and see the pursuit remains as vibrant and entertaining as ever. "This is a way of letting them see that poetry is a viable art form," he said. "It has value, and it has entertainment value as well as cultural value. "For the area, I think it should be an eye-open- er." The day's events will be taking place at Port Perry's Latcham Centre. (April 21).
