They are among some 50,000 members of the On- (ONA), which was handed the news of the proposed rollback by their employ- er, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA). The OHA represents 173 On- tario hospitals, including the local institution. The ONA calls the pro- posed roll back "unprece- dented" and "an affront" to the profession. Beverly Brown, head of the ONA local which rep- resents some 50 nurses at Community Memorial, * province are stung by the JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR CELEBRATION PLANNED: A special ceremony, including an appearance by celebrated Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester is planned for Saturday (May 11), when the 20th anniversary of Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry is marked. She said the rollback is particularly galling to nurses who, as a result of previous agreements and the social contract, have had no wage increases for the past six years. "It just seems to be such an affront to the nursing profession as a whole," she said last week. "I think nurses have al- ways looked at salaries as a value: How much does society value nursing? This was like a slap in the face." Mrs. Brown said the wage rollback would re- sult in a decrease of about $5 an hour at the top of the wage scale, and roughly $3 an hour for more junior union members. She speculated that the dispute would wind up go- ing to binding arbitration, as the OHA appears un- willing to budge trom its hard-line stance. Nurses are deemed essential ser- vice providers, and do not have the right to strike. In a way, that's a relief, said Mrs. Brown: "Most of us would not feel comforta- ble with withdrawing ser- vices in any form, any- way." David Brown, CEO at Community Memorial, said that since the posi- tion on wages has been adopted by the OHA, he's not at liberty to discuss de- tails of the proposal. But he said hospitals across the province are struggling to cope with funding reductions -- dealt out by the Progres- sive Conservative govern- ment at Queen's Park -- while trying to maintain services and avoid layoffs: "The situation is that the hospital is faced with an 18 per cent reduction over Nurses angry over pay cut Proposal from OHA would cut wages 20%: local rep the next three years," he said. "Nobody likes to do that sort of thing (propose wage reductions), but eco- nomic times are much dif- ferent now than they were five years ago.' Mrs. Brown agreed that nurses in Port Perry have been fortunate to avoid layoffs, a very harsh reali- ty for their colleagues in other parts of the prov- ince. "In Port Perry we are really lucky," she said. "We have had a concerted effort from the manage- ment team to reduce the budget...without layoffs." Still, morale could lag among nurses, who see the system to which they're committed eroding be- cause of money matters, ~said Mrs. Brown. "There's a very big fear as to what's happening with the health care sys- temas a whole." rm ree Nn "HBB BBO BDO RI., S Srey EY 3 ight batter = NOW SERVING BREAKFAST THURS., FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY (& Holiday Mondays) 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM 985-0880 é é é 8 4 ke o : & é | 6 E "888-888-8888 89-89-0088 ofa", es 8800000080000 00080000080000000000 00800008800 a0888080088080608808000088000080000000000A4080000R000 000s nsnnnndes LJ vr I AB BGR PIZZA |BIGFOO MEDIUM PIZZA | SIRE (BOY.
