Do", on Sunday, May 26, 1996 from noon to 4 p.m. in the HMS Room in the Ajax Community Cen- tre, 75 Centennial Street, Ajax, Ontario. Two keynote speakers 'featured will be Dr. Ken Buttoo, Internist, who specializes in allergies, and Ian Morton who is Project Director of Envi- ronmental health pro- grams for The Ontario Lung Association and creator of the C.A.N. DO Sponsored by local Lung Association program. Dr. Buttoo will lecture on asthma and al- lergies, and Mr. Morton will examine, using dem- onstrations, common sources, myths and solu- tions to common indoor environmental problems. C.A.N. DO - The Move- ment For Clean Air Now, was selected as the main focus of this year's fair as most people spend about 90 per cent of their time in- doors so the quality of the indoor air can affect their health. The All About Asthma Fair, which is free to the public, will also feature ex- hibitors from various drug, oxygen and environ- mental product compa- nies; displays and demon- strations; an auction; a kiddie's area with Dur- ham Regional Police's ro- botic K.C. bear; and Ask the Doctor, Pharmacist, and Respiratory Thera- pistinformation tables. Asthma, which affects about one in five children and one in 10 adults, is a condition in which the air- ways in the lungs become inflamed and highly irri- table. This irritability makes them narrow more easily in response to exer- cise and when exposed to dust, smoke, cold air, or things that a person is al- lergic to. As the airways narrow, airflow in the lungs is restricted, mak- ing it more difficult to breathe. The Lung Association's spring Asthma Appeal runs to the end of May and raises funds to support programs such as Asthma Outreach and Breathe Easy, for the production of many health education pamphlets and the All About Asthma Fair.
