8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 14, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Three-car collision injures several Ajax man dies in crash An Ajax man is dead after a three- vehicle collision in the west end of the township Friday night. Durham Regional Police are still investigating the fatal accident, which came about when two cars collided at. the intersection of Regional Rds. 23 and 21 west of Utica around 7:30 p.m. Police said one car was southbound on Rd. 23, and collided with a vehicle that was westbound on Rd. 21. The southbound car spun out of control and slammed into a pole at the south- west corner of the intersection. Meanwhile, the westbound vehicle slammed into an eastbound car that was at the stop sign on Rd. 21. Police said one driver sustained serious injuries, and firefighters were called out to extricate a driver from a vehicle. Others involved in the accident were taken to Cottage Hospital in Uxbridge for treatment. Pronounced dead at the scene was Chris McCormic, 61, of Ajax, the driver removed from his vehicle by firefight- ers. Police said an investigation of the accident was continuing early this week. It's essentially the same budget that went down to a surprise defeat last Mon- day, when three trustees changed their votes after - IN THIS WORLD, THE LIMITED EDITION GMC KODIAK SIERRAS for a limited time get a no-charge boxliner and IT°S SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. It's a $361.4 million budget which requires a 2.7 per cent hike, on aver- age, for taxpayers in the region. The only change brought about by a hasti- ly-arrangéd budget meet- ing last Wednesday night was a move to put seven jobs for speech and lan- guage pathologists and other support staff back in. The move is to take place at no extra cost, meaning staff must find the money for the posi- tions elsewhere in the sys- tem. A motion to chop almost $3 million, made last Mon- day night when the budget was defeated, was with- drawn by Oshawa trustee Mike Nicholson. In the end, the budget passed, 10-5. It was a doc- ument that was accepted with reservations, if not distaste. "I don't think anybody's' happy with the budget," said Scugog rep Bobbie Drew. "I don't like 2.74 per "cent; I think it's too high." But the board was left in a difficult position by pro- vincial cuts, she said. De- spite chopping millions in costs and actually reduc- ing the budget level by $5 million from 1995, trus- tees had to demand a tax increase. : "The province has used Durham dollars to lower their deficit," said Mrs. Drew. She remains concerned over the heavy staff cuts brought about by the re- ductions. In all more than 170 positions were cut, 42 of them from central ad- ministration and the re- mainder as a result of the elimination of programs such as Junior Kinder- garten and continuing ed- ucation. With the passage of the budget, trustees something of a parting shot at the 'government; they lent support to a reso- lution, put forth by Ajax trustee Colleen Jordan, which says any further funding cuts for schools will "seriously impact" the Durham board's ability to provide quality education to kids here. took 300) (EXCLUDES TREIGHT $870) RL 230 HP Vortec 5000 V8 SFI engine, 4-speed automatic transmission, 4-wheel ABS, dniver's side air bag, side-gquard door beams, air conditioning, AM/FM cassette, cloth seats, chrome grille, rally wheels, tilt wheel, cruise control, power steering, ant fron "STAR" * tinted glass, all steel 6 5 ft cargo box, intermittent wipers, underrail boxliner \ ] ur Pontiac .
