These are the plants such as peo- - nies, shasta daisies and delphiniums, which grow from hardy, fleshy roots that live over the winter in all but the coldest parts of Canada. The plant foliage dies with autumn's frost, but each spring, new foliage is sent forth from the roots. In some colder parts of the country it may be advisable to mulch plants for the winter. In cities such as Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, however, there is a long list of varying perennials which will survive most winters. Even in cities which experience much colder winters but also regularly have a good cov- ering of snow most of the winter, many perennials will survive most of the winters. Herbaceous perennials are the "in" plants, and even the growers of annual plants are promoting the fact that many perennials can be sown from seed much like many annuals are. While some promoters of perennials state that perennials take less care and attention than annuals, according to the Canadian Garden Council, that is, at best, doubtful. If one examines all aspects of growing the two types of plants, it is likely thecase that no firm statement can be made either way! Perennials, however, do have many advantages. While both types of plants need care and attention, with perennials, to some degree, the time for peak garden work is spread across the calendar more than it is with annuals.
