Tl Ss out on top. On la to "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 22, 1996 - 31 Donaldson's back in lead in Thunder Car feature By R. Wayne Geen Some things never change! It would seem most driv- ers in the Thunder Car di- vision at Mosport Interna- tional Speedway are in for another long year, as last year's champion Ken Do- naldson took command of the 20 lap feature on lap six and never looked back. Two other strong con- tenders from last season, Dan Robinson and Vic Mannette, finished second and third. Rounding out the top five were Ken Per- rier and Robin McNevin. Once into the lead, Do- naldson and his 'Cartoon Rocket' were able to open up and maintain a com- fortable lead. Battles for position were farther back in the pack, particularly for third, fourth and fifth positions. Perrier took over the third spot just passed the half- way mark with a dive to the inside of Dave Crow- thers as the pair entered turn one. With just five laps left, McNevin and Mennette started to close the gap that Perrier had built up. A lap later, Man- nette than passed Perrier as the duo went through turns three and four. Taking the checkered flags in heat races were Donaldson and Robinson, each with a pair. The Open Wheel Modi- fied feature was a battle . between the machines of eventual winner Jim Ros- siter and 'Terrible' Tom Milligan, who took the runner-up spot in the 26 lap event. Rounding out the top five were Bob Phinne- more, Larry Jackson and Ritchie Mannette, in only his second race in an Open Wheel Modified. The opening few laps set the tone for what was to follow, as polesitter Todd Holmes and Brett Osler, who started third, ran side-by-side for the first lap, with Holmes coming two, Alex Hamilton and Rossit- er (#66 Bill Penny Auto) touched exiting turn four, with no damage done. Milligan (#23 Custom Engine Service), who started in the second spot, moved back into that posi- tion shortly after, and then went outside Holmes on lap five and into the lead down the front straight. Mannette then put Holmes back into third, with Rossiter moving him back to fourth the very nextlap. The top three - Milligan, Mannette and Rossiter - each separated by about five car lengths from one another, began to pull away from the rest of the field. Rossiter then began to eatinto the gap between himself and Mannette, eventually getting by with a move to the inside as the pair entered turns one and two. After a caution flag re- grouped the field just passed the halfway mark, Rossiter looked inside Mil- ligan in turn one, but couldn't make the pass. Again in turns three and four, Rossiter got inside and stayed there down the front straight, and again Milligan was able to main- tain the top spot. The third time proved to be the charm for Rossiter, as both he and Larry Jack- son got by Milligan. With just two laps re- maining, Jackson and Rossiter ran side-by-side down the front straight, but in turns three and four, Jackson bobbled and got shuffled back to fourth spot. Rossiter crossed the fin- ish line first, followed by Milligan, Phinnemore, Jackson and Mannette (#56 Serway Heating & Air Conditioning). Taking heat wins were Milligan and Rossiter. After two failed at- tempts to start the Late Model Sportsman feature (which was scheduled for 25 laps, but shortened to 15 due to time) saw Brad Corcoran lead one of the largest LMS fields at Mos- Talented Amateur The Uxbridge Canada Day Committee is sponsoring an amateur musical talent show on July 1, 1996 at Elgin Park at 7:00pm with $300 in cash prizes. Corcoran and Linc Brown were able to open up an early five car length lead on Gary Mead and eventual winner Kevin O'Hara. Rino Montanari brought out a caution when he tagged the wall exiting turn four and rode the wall the entire length of the front straight before, coming to a stop in turn one. The following restart saw O'Hara slip by Mead for third. Shortly after, Mead and Glen Waterfall spun and brought out an- other yellow. With Corco- ran (#50 Slick 50) still in the lead, O'Hara (#05 O.C. Motor Sales) moved into second just prior to the halfway mark and then into the lead. O'Hara crossed the fin- ish line first, followed by Joe Sefo, Corcoran, Brown and last year's titlist Mike Horton. O'Hara won one heat race, with the others going to Jeff Hanley, Montanari and Sefo. Robert Andrews jumped out to a first lap lead in the 20 lap Street Stock fea- ture, only to have Bob Kish take the top spot on the next lap. Possibly the best battle of the night developed then for positions two through six, as Andrews, Craig Chen, eventual win- ner Andy Warbutton, Dave lee and Steven Knab fought nose-and-tail and side-by-side, with Warbutton emerging in second. Heats wins went to Lee and Warbutton.
