Published every Tuesday by the Port Perry Star Co, Lid. - 188 Mary Street - Port Perry, Ont. Editorial Comment Censorship on the shelf This past week the issue of library materials, and books that may be offensive to some, was raised by a local man. He was taken aback to see a paperback copy of Lethal Marriage, the tell-all account of the life and crimes of Paul Bernardo and his wife Karla Homolka, prominently displayed at Scugog Memorial Library. He said that if he had his druthers, the book wouldn't be at the library at all. He feels -- and he has a point -- the book is a sensational peep show, detailing some of the most shocking crimes ever to occur here. At the same time, the man who registered the complaint realizes he can't dictate to others what they read, or have available to them at the public library. It is, as the saying goes, a free country, and among our rights and freedoms is intellectual freedom, perhaps the most important of them all. That's the policy to which the library board adheres, and they're right to do so. Among their stated policies are important points: That some material may be offensive to some, but that the expression and conveyance of ideas and information is paramount; and that material shouldn't be selected or rejected on the basis of whether or not somebody will be upset if they find it on the shelves. It's about community standards. But the over riding standard has to be the right to think, say, and read and write, to share ideas and information, without fear of reprisal or rejection. We live in an age of information. Some is unpleasant, and of a nature we don't want to expose our kids or ourselves to. That's where another right comes into play: The right to choose. I live on Fralick's Beach Road. I've seen the garbage in the lake. I've seen the trash on the ground. I hate pollution. Do you like to see trash when you go walking? Think about it. The garbage you throw might hurt a bird or animal. After you read my letter, I hope you under- stand that polluting is wrong. I'm asking you Shooting competitions.
